I woke to the bumping of driving over gravel. I sit up and rub my eyes trying to asses where I am. "We're here." Aunt Liliana says from beside me and I look out the window to find a two story house with a long fence that stretches all across the grassy hills. The only source of life around us is the cow I can see in it's pen. The truck parks in the gravel driveway and Aunt Liliana practically jumps out of the truck. I sling my bag over my shoulder and take a deep breath before jumping out after my aunt."My babies were so excited to see you!" I quirk an eyebrow at my aunt as I meet her at the door. Looking behind me, the country is quite beautiful. We're on a small hill overlooking a town. So I guess we aren't completely stranded. "Your whats?" My question was answered when the door opened to reveal two giant dogs who immediately pounced on me. "AGH!" I shout as I'm brought to the floor of the patio. Two big dogs lick my face and I laugh loudly, "Hey you guys get off!" I lightly shove them off of me so I can sit upright and get a good look at them. The dogs had cute curly tails that fluffed up and they had floppy ears. I coo as I rub the head of the white and tan one. The brown one nudges me and I laugh and pet it too. "Aw what are their names?" Aunt Liliana sits down next to me and cuddles the brown one's face in her hands. "This clingy guy is Ollie. He's not usually this energetic except for when he's chasing the chickens..." She gestures to the white and tan one that's settled on my lap, "That's Peach. She seems to love you. She's very serious unlike this rascal-" Liliana fake growls as she gives Ollie a belly rub.
We stand up and Aunt Liliana ushers Peach and Ollie in the house. I follow them into the house and I have to admit, it's much nicer than what I thought weird farmer Aunt Liliana would live in. There's lots of big windows so nice natural shines through. The house is white accented with yellows, greens, and pinks. A white couch sits in the living room, it's decorated with a yellow quilt and yellow and pink pillows. A cute pink and green rug sits in between the couch and the T.V. The dining room is about the same but the walls are a dusty yellow and littered with pictures of our family. I see a picture of Mama and my older siblings when we were younger. Veronica and I are holding onto each other on Mama's right side and Danny and Aunt Liliana stand to the left. Not only do Danny and Liliana talk similarly, they also have the same face shape. When the two are put close together they look so similar....
The next picture is of Tio Mateo and his wife Lauren with their children. Thomas and Thalia got their dark skin from their mother their long curly brown hair from Mateo. I'm not very close with Thomas and Thalia, mainly because they live in Seattle but I also think Dad and Mateo don't get along. I frown at the sight of my cousins. I could be so close to them and we could be such good friends. I'm pretty sure Thomas is my age too. The next picture is of my other uncle Diego, his wife Camille, and their daughters, Mariposa, Ramira, and Tasha. Those cousins I know because they used to visit often. Mariposa was one year younger than me, Ramira two, and Tasha four. Mariposa's startling green eyes, Ramira's freckles all over her face and Tasha's toothy grin make my heart ache for my family. I move onto the next picture and that's where the ache really hurts.
Abuelita and Abuelo sit on the same couch I just saw in the living room. In between them, a teen Mateo squishes in with his parents with a wide smile. Sitting on the floor are Liliana, Diego, and Mama all varying from ages twelve to sixteen. My eyes burn though at the hauntingly familiar skinny and tan boy standing behind the couch with his hand on Abuelita's shoulder. He wears a big smile and it exposes a missing front tooth. His curly hair sticks up and freckles spread from his face to his neck. A chill settles over me seeing this boy after soon learning how he's gone.
He looks just like me.
Danny looks like Liliana, Veronica looks Diego and Chloe looks like Mateo. I look like Leandro.
A gentle hand rests on my shoulder and I look into the heavy brown eyes of Aunt Liliana. "It's sad you'll never be able to meet him." I gulp and nod while looking back at the picture. It's like seeing a character from a movie you've seen hundred of times that dies in the end but they don't know it. "Are you missing your cousins?" I nod, "And all my Tio and Tias." Liliana lightly punches me, "Hey! I'm here!" I chuckle and pull my eyes from the picture, "I know. I just wish it could be all of us together." Liliana sighs. "I've been wishing that too hun. Instead our family insists on ignoring your Mama's problems with her husband, Abuelita's problems with her health-" I wince at that, Abuelita's cancer really has been forgotten, "and they completely cut ties with me to choose to ignore the pain of Leandro. Honestly Mateo and Diego are so stubborn. They refuse to help their sisters and Mama because of their grudge for our brother." I grip her hand which feels odd but nice to have a familial figure.
"We can do it. They just need to see that it's no one's fault." Liliana smiles sadly at that, "Hey I'm supposed to be the therapist!" I chuckle and pull my hand away to pet Peach who's curled up at my feet. "But that's a good idea Lance!" I quirk an eyebrow and look up to see Liliana beaming. "Having the family all together here!" I can feel my eyes go wide and my jaw go slack. "WE'D KILL EACH OTHER!" She waves off my screech, "Hardly. Maybe a little fist fight but no murder. Jesus Lance chill out." I scoff and roll my eyes. "Mateo and his wife live in Seattle. That's on the other side of the country." I deadpan. Liliana shrugs, "I'd get them plane tickets." I glare at her face trying to analyze it and see if she's really serious.
"You- You're really serious." Liliana pulls me up and gives me a stern look, "Very serious." I give her a questioning look back, "Deadass?" She nods, "Deadass." I whistle. "That's going to be eventful. If they even show up." Suddenly a phone goes off and Liliana quickly answers her phone. "Oh! Hey Ryan. Yeah you won't be working 'till tomorrow. Thanks for feeding the dogs by the way. Do you think you'd be able to show Lance the work you two will be doing tomorrow early? Oh I don't know maybe seven am-" Her voice trails off as she walks to the kitchen and I feel myself deflate. Farm work....
