Acxa and I pull up chairs to the table Lance sits at alone. He's wearing a plain gray hoodie and sweatpants but he still takes my breath away. Shit.He looks tired, he has bags under his eyes and his hair isn't brushed down; it's curled now. I resist the urge to run my hands through his hair and instead I introduce him and Acxa.
"Lance this is Acxa, my sister and Acxa this is Lance" I pause awkwardly, "my friend." Lance smiles brightly at Acxa and she looks taken aback. She smiles softly and asks him, "You and Keith must be close for you to drive all the way up here for us." She raises an eyebrow at me and I feel a blush start to creep up my neck.
"Keith is a friend from school. I guess you could say we are fairly close." Lance puts emphasis on fairly and I can picture the word being a dagger and I can feel it stabbing my heart. But I guess that's how he felt when I called him my friend? Maybe. Probably not actually.
Lance sips from his coffee and Acxa asks him what it is, he tells her he got a triple mocha Frappuccino. Acxa leaves the table without saying anything. Lance and I are alone.
In a small store of about twenty people of course.
We smile awkwardly at each other.
"Thanks for coming out here."I try to start up a conversation. He smiles at me again and says, "Anything for you my man." After a moment of silence I figure I should probably keep our conversation going. "So uhhh how are you this morning?" He yawns and rubs his eyes. "Normal. Tired. You?" I try not to stare at his eyes as he opens them, "Disappointed." He nods, "Want to talk about it?"
I'm silent for a minute. Do I want to talk about the fact that my mother was a complete dead end and that my father gave us the wrong address and doesn't know a thing about my mother.
"No."
He nods at that too. There's just silence between us as Lance takes another sip of his very chocolate-y probably very unhealthy coffee. I'm grateful when Acxa plops down at our table with two drinks.
"Here ya go Keith. One completely black coffee for you and a triple mocha for me because Lance said it was good." She hands me my drink and I take a large gulp, coffee is so good.
She sips tentatively and her dark violet eyes widen. "THAT IS SO GOOD LANCE YOU HAVE AMAZING TASTE LET'S BE BEST FRIENDS!" She yells and pushes herself over the table so she's standing but her entire upper body is leaning over the table. She pushes her face so close to Lance I'm afraid she's going to kiss him.
She squeezes his cheeks and runs her hand through his hair. Shit I should've done that.
My hand is balled in a fist at my side and I look at Lance. He looks really uncomfortable. He's smiling but he also looks scared. I would be too. Acxa is usually a very calm and serious person, but not right now for some reason.
Once she sits back down and everyone in the entire Starbucks stops staring at us I decide to stand up. "Well? Are we going to go home?" I say. I know I sound rude but I'm really done with this place right now. I want to go home. (Which is a weird thought for me since I usually hate my home.)
Lance stands up and Acxa shrugs and stands up too. We walk out of the Starbucks and get into Lance's truck. Lance sits in the drivers seat, I sit next to him in the passenger seat and Acxa sits in the back row. She grins at me and winks. I roll my eyes and buckle my seatbelt.
"So who wants to take turns putting on music?" Lance says, looking between me and Acxa. "I'll put in my earbuds." Acxa says as she slips in her earbuds and leans against the window. She closes her eyes and I look back to Lance. "We can take turns, I'll plug in my phone and we can look on Spotify." Lance nods as he starts driving. I put my song on first, "Crazy=Genius". Lance looks at me with no surprise in his eyes, "Of Course you'd like Panic! You're emo."
