"Oh Summer, why did you go back?" Soda asked still looking at my face. I didn't reply, because I didn't know why. I had finally came up with an answer.
"I can't let go," I whispered. "I have hope and faith. I have a belief that one day she will become the person she was before I was a kid. I hope that she'll let go and escape the monster," I answered as a stream of tears flowed down my cheeks.
Two-bit set his beer down and sat on the end of the couch near me. He examined my face. "Dang..." He sighed.
Soda sighed, "Summer, I'm sorry. Once they get into that stuff most never come back. She's not going to accept you like she did in the past!"
"That's what you think!" I retorted. "I WILL prove that opinion WRONG one day. I promise!" I said nodding. When I promised, I meant it. Soda looked at me in shock. I knew what he was going to ask. "Somehow, someway... I will. I will prove that broad wrong!" I stated sitting up. I sat strong and tall. My jaw ached as blood ran from my mouth. I wiped the blood away with my sleeve and looked away. Soda reach is hand out and I pushed it away. I didn't know why, but something told me to.
"Darry is going to be ticked once he comes home. He protects and loves you like a sister," Two-bit explained. "I'm sure Soda is ticked off himself!" He added.
I snorted, "Whatever..."
"No, really-"
"Darry acts like I'm the one REALLY ANNOYING friend, or like I'm his brother's annoying girlfriend so he has to do stuff for me, because Soda would get 'mad'!" I spat.
"That's not-" One of them started.
"That IS true!" I scowled. My long bangs (as long as my hair) covered half of my face.
"Hey baby, calm down..." Soda said tucking my bangs behind my ear.
"What's the point of calming down if no one listens?" I asked with fiery filled eyes. "What's the point of anything," I muttered. "Everything was supposed to change!" I yelled. "But it didn't," I added. "When my mom got out of jail she promised she wouldn't start on that crap again! She promised she'd love me! She promised we would be a family... Dad, her, Johnny, and I. Well look where we are! Look at our lives! We are the poor and the young! But no one seems to notice," I snapped. Soda rubbed the back of his neck knowing what I said was true. "One day I started cutting," I said revealing scattered scars on my arms. "No one seemed to care," I pointed out.
"I would have," Soda said.
"But you didn't! You know why? You were busy with someone else, so you never knew," I explained in anger.
"That someone is out of my life now! I have you," Sodapop said holding my hand.
"You would still have that someone if she hadn't have left you. Depressing to know that your girlfriend cheated on you and got pregnant. You offered to take care of the child, but she never wrote back. You were engaged! If that one act hadn't have happened, you would still be with Sandy. Because you loved her!" I explained truthfully. Soda looked at the floor knowing that I had scored again. "I feel like I'm the replacement, the care taker!" I stated getting up. I walked over to the door. "I'll be picking Ponyboy up from school," I stated before walking out the door.
