Chapter Twenty-Six

I woke up desperately looking around the room. Only Ponyboy was there. "Pony?" I asked.

"Summer! You're up!" He squealed racing over. He hugged me tightly.

"What happened, Ponyboy?" I asked worriedly. I ruffled his hair.

"Sodapop, Darry, Steve, and your dad got into a fight. Steve's arm got broke, Darry is bruised black and blue, your dad is some place, and Soda's head got busted open!" Ponyboy explained nervously.

"What?!" I yelped. "They gotta let me out!!!! Where's Sodapop? And Steve! What about Two-bit and Darry?!" I panicked. I looked at the IV tubes in my arm. I carefully tore them out with a scowl covering my face.

"Summer, don't!" Ponyboy exclaimed.

"Pony, grab your books we're finding the gang," I said.

"Two is with Steve in room one-hundred one and Darry is with Soda in room one-hundred three," He explained. I nodded and rushed out of the door. I looked at the room number. Room ninety-four. I went seven doors down. Room one-hundred one. I walked inside to see, as Pony said, Two-bit and Steve.

"Did they let you out early?" Two-bit asked.

"Yeah," I lied. I knew Pony would play along. "You guys ok?" I ask.

"Just a broken arm. It's nothing really," Steve winced.

"Unharmed," Two-bit replied.

"Ok, I'm just concerned," I said. "I'm going to Soda's room," I said before leaving. We said our "goodbyes" and went to room one-hundred three. As soon as I walked in I noticed Soda passed out cold. I rushed over and hugged him tight.

"Summer, this your fault! You made Soda and Steve get harmed. Not to mention my bruises!" Darry snorted.

"I know, but would you rather him kill me? You three made the sacrifice!" I said.

"And I wish we hadn't," Darry snorted.

"What's wrong with you?!" I yelled.

"You! That's what! You got half of the gang injured!" Darry yelled in return.

"Whatever!" I scoffed.

"My brother is head over heels for you! And you let him and his best friend get hurt?" Darry scowled.

"Fine! I'll just leave!" I pouted.

"Fine," Darrel sassed.

"Fine!" I shouted. "Stay here, Ponyboy," I mumbled running out of the door. I raced into my room and grabbed my clothes from a cabinet. I quickly got dressed and bolted out of the room. I rushed down the halls and snuck through the doors of the hospital. I quickly exited the building and sprinted down the sidewalk. As soon as I was far enough from the hospital I started to walk. I panted harshly then coughed. "If they want me gone, they'll have me gone," I scoffed. I continued towards my former home. I waited at the door to toughen up and catch my breath. I was ready for an attack. I walked through the door standing face to face with my dad. "Why are you here?" I asked nervously. "Aren't you supposed to be with Allison? Your wife," I added.

"Your mom and I decided it was time to discipline you," he said. My eyes widened, this is when I clutched my switch. My dad shoved me to the hard ground. I tried to get up, but my mom held me down.

     "You're not going anywhere. Not this time," my mom scowled.

     I deserve this... I held my breath. For my dear Sodapop... My father slapped the belt against my skin multiple times. This left thin red marks on my stomach. "Let me go!" I yelled struggling. I kicked my father and he scoffed. My dad sat on my chest and wrapped his hands around my throat. He put pressure causing me to choke. After a while I became wheezy and gave up on fighting. I laid still like if I was asleep. I felt myself getting dragged, slugged in the face, beat, etc. Eventually I felt the same burning pain like in my side. I looked behind me. I held my breath as the knife was pulled from my back. My vision was blurry, but I had to protect myself. I flipped out my switch and dodged the next stab. I got on my feet and kicked my mom away. I stabbed my dad in his shoulder for distraction. I pulled my switch away and put it in my pocket. I raced towards the door. Before I got there, I blacked out for the third time this week.
