Chapter 3: Making Promises

Marrow plunged into the Whelps Den. He was overjoyed that Mist had been the only mother there so he didn't have to worry about scaring any she-wolves.

He skidded to a halt, his claws digging into the dirt ground. He turned his head and saw Somber lifting his head, whimpering as he called for his mother. Marrow padded forward and stepped into the nest, curling around him. "It's alright, daddy's here."

He pulled his son to his chest, despite his sodden pelt. He then stretched out a paw and grasped his daughter. He then set her down next to her brother and he began to groom them, checking them to make sure they hadn't caught anything like their mother. Once he was sure he set them back against his chest and held them close.

"I promise I won't let anything happen to you," vowed Marrow as he looked down on his son and daughter. He had never felt this much raw love for anything ever before, even for Mist. He loved his mate but it was a different kind of love he felt for Ashen and Somber. He had created them. They were made from a part of him and he had no idea how he could be closer to anything.

Ashen lifted her head and whimpered. Her face seemed to be straining in a strange direction and Marrow tilted his head in amusement. Ashen's eyes suddenly blinked open and Marrow rumbled in affection as he saw Ashen's eyes were a beautiful deep silvery blue. He touched his nose between her ears and couldn't contain his affection for either of his pups.

"You two are my moon and sun, my water and sky. You two are my all and everything now and I will always be here to love and protect you," he promised in a whisper and he was vaguely aware of Fallow peeking in. He didn't care. She couldn't and wouldn't take his pups away from him just because they didn't have a mother.

Somber let out a whimper and Marrow took that as a hint that he understood what his father was saying. "Yes, Somber," he barked as he stroked his son gingerly with his pad. He then corralled Ashen next to him and looked directly at him, his tail wagging madly behind him. "This is one promise I will never break."
