Days past and Ashen was surprised that she hadn't had any surgeries. Grenade hadn't either. Whisper and Somber had while Pallid was just focusing on walking. About a week after Ashen had talked to Grenade in his crate she was padding around the Social Circle with Somber. She noticed that something had been bothering him and she wanted to figure out what that was.
She pressed up against him, willing him to play a bit. He just turned his head away, keeping his head down. Her ears pricked in interest. He'd never acted this way when she had asked him to play. He was usually the one who initiated the play and she was the one who would refuse to play. Never the other way around.
"What's wrong," she asked gently as she moved closer to him and touched her nose to his cheek. He didn't answer at first but she wasn't fazed. "I know something is bothering you so just tell me what it is."
Somber sighed heavily before he stopped and turned to face his sister. "Ashen you know that I had surgery two days ago?"
"Yeah," she barked, not sure why that was so bad but she knew that each surgery got worse so she knew that she would be supportive. "What happened?"
Somber let out a breath and showed his back to his sister. She gingerly stretched out a paw and ran it along his back. He flinched and she drew back a bit, not wanting to hurt him. She saw the implants poking out in a sort of square formation at the top of his back. She saw the wires and realized that it must be painful.
"Should you really be walking," she fretted as he turned back around to face her.
He shook his head gravely. "That's not what was so bad," he murmured as he let out a breath and his chest heaved with the effort. "They took my blood and tested it again."
Ashen's heart sank. "Did they find something wrong?"
Somber blinked his eyes as he tried to stop himself from crying. "I have something in me that can't be cured but it could be passed to offspring."
Ashen's eyes widened a bit. She hadn't expected to hear that. "Oh Somber I'm so sorry," sympathized Ashen as she took a step forward her brother.
He pressed his head against her shoulder and sobbed, his whole body shaking. Tears streamed down his face and Ashen felt him shaking. She began to murmur soothing words but nothing she said could ever soften the blow.
"I'll never be able to have pups," cried Somber as he looked up a bit from crying into his sister's shoulder.
"I know," breathed Ashen as she pressed her own head against her brother's shoulder. "I'm so sorry but we will get through this. Besides right now would you ever want to bring pups into this environment?"
Somber sniffed and hung his head as tears dripped from his muzzle and onto the ground. "Of course not but one day maybe."
"Listen to me," urged Ashen as she licked his cheek affectionately. "There is a reason for everything and I promise you that there is a reason this happened to you."
"I wanted pups one day," confessed Somber as he raised a paw to swipe the tears away from his eyes. "Now that'll never happen."
"You don't know that," argued Ashen as she nudged his face so that he'd look at her. When he eventually looked up at his sister and she leaned forward, licking one of his tears away. She remembered that her father used to do that and hoped it would provide comfort for Somber. "Maybe one day you'll save a pup or adopt one."
"Those chances are slim," he grumbled as he curled his lip in disagreement.
"Slim but not impossible," pointed out Ashen as she continued to lick his tears away comfortingly. "I promise you that I'll be here if you ever need anything."
"Thank you Ashen," Somber whispered in her ear, his voice quivering a bit as he tried not to cry again. "You're the best sister ever."
"I'm your only sister," Ashen joked as she nudged him a bit, trying to get him to loosen a bit.
He snorted in amusement. "Perhaps but that doesn't mean that you're not the best sister ever," he joked as he pushed his head against the side of Ashen's neck, just like he had done when they were younger. Somber recalled when his father had slept with them in the Whelps den how he had always pushed his head against Ashen's neck and she had rested her head on his paws. It brought them both back to their days in pack life.
"Then I think that you're the best brother ever," Ashen rumbled back as she licked his ear and took in his scent which smelled almost exactly like his father's scent. "I also think that one day you'll be the best father ever."
Somber shuffled his paws. "Well we don't know if I'll ever get that chance," he pointed out.
Ashen took a step away from her brother and lifted a paw. "No we don't but I promise no matter what we'll get through anything because we're littermates and littermates always stick together, right?"
Somber raised his own paw and intertwined his claws with hers and they both smiled. "Always," he replied as he smiled at her.
She rested her paw back down before bolting forward and butting her head against his shoulder. "Come on. I've challenged Whisper and Pallid to a game of truth or dare? Want to play?"
"Of course," he barked excitedly as he wiggled his haunches. "However I'll warn you, whichever you chose I can embarrass you."
"I'll take my chances," she shot back before she pounced on the ground.
Somber barked before he bounded past his sister with Ashen following. Even even in a place as awful of the lab they could still learn how to have fun.
