Ashen was awakened by the sound of shouting in the early morning. She lifted her head and nudged Somber's paw from her flank. She rose to her paws and blinked the sleep from her eyes. She twitched her ears as the wailing grew louder and she peeked her head into Whisper's cage where Grenade slept. He thrashed around madly, his claws extending as he continued to throw his body. His eyes were squeezed closed and he continued to wail.
Ashen's eyes widened in shock as she leaped down out of her crate before she leaped into Whisper's crate where Grenade slept.
"Grenade," she breathed as she nudged a paw against his shoulder, trying to wake him up.
Grenade kept thrashing and yelping around. Ashen realized that she was going to have to be firmer. She thrust her paws on Grenade's shoulders and shook him. "Grenade wake up! You're having a nightmare."
"Leave her alone!" Grenade wailed and arched his back and Ashen saw the cybernetic implants moving with him. "Don't touch her!"
"Grenade!" Ashen sunk her teeth into Grenade's shoulder, trying to do anything to wake him up. Grenade suddenly took his paws and scratched his claws against her shoulders. She gasped in pain as blood oozed onto the ground. She leaped back before she growled and bounded forward. She slammed her head against Grenade's flank and skidded him to the back of the crate.
When Grenade's head hit the back he jolted awake, gasping for air as if he had just been underwater. He looked at his claws and realized they were covered in blood. He kept gasping and shook madly, not knowing where the blood had come from. He looked around madly and his eyes widened in shock. He began to shake, his whole body convulsing.
Ashen darted to Grenade's side but Grenade nudged himself away from Ashen. "It's okay," chided Ashen gently. "It's me, Ashen."
Grenade looked up, his eyes widened in shock. "Ashen," he repeated as he licked his lips in shock.
"It's alright," assured Ashen as she nudged Grenade gently with her muzzle. "You're okay. Nothing's happening to you."
Grenade looked down at the blood and fur caught between his paws. "Blood," he gasped before Ashen lowered down and Grenade showed her shoulders. Grenade pushed himself against the back of the crate, whimpering. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm sorry."
"Grenade," barked Ashen sternly as she forced Grenade to look at him. "It's alright. I'm fine. It's just a flesh wound."
Grenade continued shaking and Ashen pushed closer to her friend. "I know that you're scared but it was just a nightmare."
"Just a nightmare," echoed Grenade as he continued to shake. "This whole place is a nightmare. These Terrans have killed so many creatures for fun!"
Ashen nodded in agreement and allowed Grenade to lean on her. They sat in silence and Ashen wrapped her tail around Grenade to try and calm him down. The silence continued for a while before Ashen thought that Grenade had calmed down a bit so she could ask a question.
"Who were you yelling about in your dream," Ashen whispered.
Grenade looked up at her. "What," he asked as he rubbed a paw against his eyes.
"You were yowling in your sleep to leave someone alone and not to touch her," explained Ashen. "Who were you talking about?"
Grenade's eyes hollowed and he hung his head. "I'm sorry you had to hear that. I didn't want to sleep but I drifted off."
Ashen tilted her head. "How often do you sleep," wondered Ashen as she leaned close to Grenade so that he didn't have to speak loudly.
Grenade shifted uncomfortably. "I don't know," he mumbled, his shoulders shifting a bit. "Not a lot I suppose."
