Ashen awoke from Grenade churning his paws against her. She looked to her other side and saw that Rocket had left. Embarrassment flooded through her when she realized that he had seen her asleep when she should have been watching for danger. She brushed it off before she turned her gaze to Grenade.
"Grenade," she barked as she pushed her cold nose into Grenade's thick fur. "Grenade you need to wake up."
"Why," he complained as he pawed at her muzzle and she recoiled. "There's no danger yet."
"Perhaps but we should always be ready. Besides we've slept enough." She lowered her head and picked up Grenade by the scruff. He yelped in surprise and she swung her head and placed him on her back.
"Okay. Okay, I'm awake," he hissed as he stretched out and kinked is tail over his back. "No need to get rough."
Ashen rumbled in amusement before she rose to her paws and leapt from the bags of seeds. She landed gently and turned her attention to the entrance. "Let's head to the bridge. Maybe it's not much longer."
"I hope not," meowed Grenade as he leaped from Ashen's shoulders and stood erect. "I hate being on this thing."
"It's called a ship," corrected Ashen matter-of-factly. Grenade worked his claws on the ground and rolled his eyes. Ashen growled in amusement before she pushed forward. Grenade followed them and they climbed up the stairs to the bridge.
Ashen adjusted her eyes to the light coming from the stars before she forced herself forward. She saw Groot and Rocket driving the ship while Gamora held back and so did Peter. Ashen saw that their eyes were widened and she wasn't sure why.
Grenade poked her in the shoulder and pointed in the direction they were looking. "Woah," she breathed as her heart shipped a beat. "What is that."
"It's a severed head from an ancient creature," replied Gamora and Ashen felt her fur prickle.
Grenade pushed closer to Ashen. "We're going in there, aren't we?"
Ashen heaved a sigh and looked to Peter. "I believe we are."
"It's called Knowhere," continued Gamora as she sat in a seat behind Rocket. "Careful going in there rodent, their's no rules."
The Malono continued forward and entered the creature through the mouth. They sped forward and they all looked around. Small mechanical bots flew through the air, harvesting different things from the massive creature's head.
"Once it was decommissioned a mining colony moved in here and are now harvesting brain tissue, spinal fluid, and other organic substances," Gamora explained and Ashen saw bright yellow fluid being mixed to her right.
They landed and all of them strode from the ship. They padded through the crowded ship and Ashen actually felt like she would belonged here. There were plenty of other freaks around her so she no longer looked so out of place. They whole group seemed to blend in, well everyone besides Groot. Ashen was still getting used as well as everyone else to talking to a tree who only said, 'I am Groot'.
Ashen felt a pang of sympathy as she saw young pup, probably only 2 moons old, scavenging for food on the streets. She saw a group of five pups pawing through a trashcan with mold growing on the sides. The leader, a black and white Husky with blue eyes, was the first to dive in and he brought out a fish carcass with a bit of meat left on it. The rest of the pups dug in while the leader held back. He would wait until they rest of his group had their fill before he ate anything.
"I'll be right back," Ashen told Grenade as she padded toward the pups. She cleared her through when she saw about a pace away from them.
The pups yelped and bolted behind the trashcan. The Husky pup drew forward, growling and baring his teeth in a snarl. He was the protector also.
