Ashen stood on top of her cage. She looked down on Whisper, Pallid, Dish, Grenade, and Somber looking at her with excitement gleaming in their eyes. She wasn't sure why they were excited. She was the one who was about to leap off of the cage and hope that her wings caught her or she'd have a very painful landing.
"We don't have all night Ashen," Somber howled as he looked up at his sister.
"Yeah, yeah I know," muttered Ashen as she looked down, her eyes widening a bit as she realized what she was about to do.
She spread her wings and saw how large they were. They were beautifully white and feathered and she wondered how something this beautiful could ever carry her full weight. However she knew that birds flew with wings that were larger their than body so why couldn't she?
She took in a breath and darted forward. She leaped into the air and felt her wings catch her a bit. She stayed in the air for a bit before she gasped as she plummeted. She fell into the ground hard and skidded into the other cages. She groaned as she lifted her head and her wings flopped over her face.
"Are you okay," asked Whisper as she darted to Ashen's side and looked down on her in concern.
"Fine," assured Ashen as she stood and folded her wings back against her side. She shook her pelt and rubbed a paw against her one ear. "I guess I have to try and maybe flap them a bit."
"You're not going to try again, are you," fretted Grenade as he padded forward with Pallid dragging himself behind him.
"Of course I am," barked Ashen as she turned her head upward in determination.
"Be careful," chided Dish as if he was the adult. "You could hurt yourself."
"I can't hurt myself much more than the Terrans have already hurt me," Ashen pointed out as she bounded toward the cages. She leaped onto the top of them and hauled herself upward. She looked down and spread her wings against, thinking about how she would make herself fly.
She spread her wings again and took in a breath. She began forward slowly and this time she didn't jump. She just kept walking until there was no more cage. She felt like she was falling but her wings caught her and she hovered. She took in a breath and flapped them once. It sent her higher and when she flapped against she went higher still. She let out a howl of glee and she heard her friends cheering below her.
She spread her wings before tipping her one wing and she turned right and when she tipped the other wing she went left. She yipped excitedly, thinking she finally had a bit of an idea of how to control her new found power of flight. She continued flapping around a bit and mastering new techniques of turning and steering in still air environments before she thought it was time to try herself at a landing.
The only landings she had done so far were crash landings. Still landings but not nearly as good. She let out a breath and prepared herself.
"Land right before me," howled Somber as he bounded a few paces from the door where the Terrans usually came out. He pawed at the ground with his eyes transfixed on his sister.
Ashen let out a breath and prepared herself. She floated down before she angled her wings. They dropped her a bit faster than she expected and she was left struggling to keep her body upright. She slowed a bit too quickly and had to flap again to give herself an extra boost. She then realized that she wasn't going to land in front of Somber, she was going to plow Somber over.
"Look out," she howled as her front paws touched the ground but her hindlegs were no where near ready. She twisted into the air and surged into Somber. The two went rolling in a mess of tails and paws and slammed into the door.
