"Ashen. Ashen. Ashen, you okay?"

Ashen moaned as she heard in the distance someone calling her name. She went to raise a paw over her ears but pain in her shoulders made her halt and gasp.

"Ashen."

Ashen forced herself to open her eyes but when she tried to force herself to her paws her body fatigued and she fell back down, grumbling in pain. "What the heck did they do to me," Ashen cried as she squeezed her eyes tightly.

Ashen heard shuffling beside her and realized that it had been Whisper who was talking to her. "Ashen how are you?"

"I feel awful," Ashen confessed as she arched her back, more pain filling her body. She felt as if someone had just ripped open her back and she realized that they probably did.

"Your second surgery is always a killer since they start with harsher injections and usually place at least one wire if now more," explained Whisper as she tapped her paws against the ground thoughtfully.

"Does it ever get any easier," asked Ashen as her eyes widened in agony and she let out a few ragged breaths. Just breathing unleashing a wave of agony through her body.

Whisper wanted to lie and make her feel better but if they were truly friends then she couldn't do that to Ashen. "I'm afraid not. If you ask me each one is worse than the later."

Ashen took that in and pushed her head against the back of the crate, wishing she could just die in a hole. She hated all of this pain and she had only been through two surgeries. She didn't even want to think how many surgeries Grenade had had since he'd been here for a year and he was still having more!

"Hey Ashen," pressed Whisper, wondering if Ashen had fallen asleep.

Ashen turned her head a bit and plastered her ears against her head. "Yes Whisper," she asked as she sprawled out her front paws.

"Do you know how Pallid is," Whisper asked as she shuffled her paws.

Ashen lifted her head, instantly regretting it. "I'm sorry I don't." She gulped in disgust. "I watched his surgery though. They made us."

Whisper's eyes narrowed to rage filled slits. "Those jerks," she hissed as the fur along her spine bristled. Her eyes suddenly flickered. "He got those implants, didn't he?"

Ashen sighed, the breath billowing from her nostrils. "Yes," she answered simply as she turned her head. "They cut him open and squeezed those implants into his flesh and they made me watched. I watched! I should have done something-"

"There was nothing you could have done," argued Whisper sternly, not wanting Ashen to fall in a haze. She had seen numerous creatures fall into it. They refused to eat or drink or even get up. All they did was sleep and wouldn't even talk. She would not let Ashen turn out like that.

"I should have done something," Ashen repeated, her paws twitching in fury.

"They would have killed you if you tried to do something," pointed out Whisper, her tail lashing. "I know. I've seen it before."

Ashen pricked her ears in interest. "Y-You have," she stammered, interest sounding in her voice.

Whisper turned her back, growling. "Yes I have. That's all I'm going to say about that." She gave her pelt a shake. "Now I know if you got involved it would be the end of you. All you can do now is rest and pray that Pallid and your brother are okay after their surgeries."

Ashen decided that was a good idea. She was about halfway into sleep before her eyes softened and she let out a breath. "What was their name? The one who died standing up for another?"

Whisper stiffened and debated whether or not to answer. After what seemed like an eternity she sighed. "S-Slate. His name was Slate."
