It had been half a moon and Somber hadn't gotten any better. Every night Ashen was sleeping in her brother's cage and made sure that he wasn't getting any worse. She didn't get much rest between worrying about him and Somber's coughing.
The particular night she just placed a paw over her ear and groaned as she tried to block out the sound. She managed to drift off but she was awoken by harsh shaking. She blinked open her eyes and saw Somber standing over him, fear sparking in his eyes.
"Somber," she mumbled as she tried to force her body to wake up.
"Ashen," gasped Somber and it sounded like he was speaking as though he was drinking something. "Ashen something's very wrong."
Ashen sat up and looked on Somber's paws. Blood splattered his paws and Ashen's eyes widened in shock. She wanted to say something but she just couldn't. A stream of light suddenly showed from inside the cage and she saw blood dripping from his mouth.
"Help," wailed Ashen as she leaped from the cage, darting around madly. She surged into the Social Circle and bounded where she knew that the group would be. She skidded to a halt and nearly tumbled into Grenade.
"Ashen are you okay, "he asked with concern lighting in his eyes. He hadn't seen Ashen this frantic in a while.
Ashen shook her head. "No it's Somber. He was coughing up blood."
"Blood," echoed Whisper in shock as she bolted to her paws, her eyes rounding like moons.
"Yes blood," repeated Ashen as her voice shook. What was happening to her brother?
"Calm down," chided Grenade as he rushed to his own paws and waved his tail. "Tell us slowly what happened."
Ashen was thankful for Grenade's clam tone and sighed heavily. "Of course. Well Somber's been ill for about half a moon and tonight I woke up to him shaking me. When I looked I saw blood on his paws and blood on his mouth. That's when I ran to get you."
"What's wrong with my father," asked Dish in a tone that made Ashen's blood run cold. It was obvious how close the two had become and Dish would be as devastated as Ashen if something happened to Somber.
Whisper rested a paw gingerly on Dish's shoulder to try and comfort him. Ashen turned her gaze to Grenade who was thinking thoughtfully. He nodded a bit before he padded up to Ashen. "May I see him?"
Ashen nodded very slowly. "Of course Grenade. Do you believe you can help him?"
Grenade blinked hi eyes. "I'm not a healer by any means but I do know a few things about illnesses. Just let me see him."
Ashen sighed heavily and kinked her tail over her back. "Alright come with me." With that she turned and bounded forward, praying that Grenade could help her brother. She knew that Grenade would do anything for Somber so she knew that she had to trust him.
She bounded to her brother's crate and heard him hacking painfully. "Somber," she breathed in pain as her eyes widened in concern. Grenade leaped inside Somber's crate and came behind the wolf.
Somber turned his head and looked to Grenade, blood dripping from his mouth as he coughed painfully. Grenade rested a paw against Somber's chest and felt the tightness. He also heard the sound of fluid inside and it sounded painful. Grenade looked up and saw blood oozing from his nose as well. Somber sneeze harshly and a small stream of blood dripped from his face and he groaned, his hacking fit finally subsiding. He looked to Grenade with milky eyes while Grenade felt fever radiating off of his pelt.
"You need to try and rest," Grenade murmured to Somber gently as he pressed his nose against Somber's leg and steered him toward the corner of his cage.
