Ashen surged forward, rage lighting in her eyes. She plowed into the legs of the Terran and the Terran fell to the ground, twisting in pain. Ashen then turned on him and sunk her teeth into his shoulder, pulling and twisting. She tasted blood in her mouth and felt all of the rage she felt to the Terrans spill out.
Once she knew that the Terran wasn't going to be causing her trouble any time soon she released him and continued her attack. She sunk her teeth into another Terran's leg and pulled. The Terran turned and kicked her hard in the ribs. She yelped in pain as she skidded sideways, flopping over in agony.
She raised her head and saw the Terran point the gun at her head. With a screech a tawny colored owl flew through the air and grasped the gun in her talons. She pulled it from the Terran's hand easily and threw it aside. She then jabbed her beak into the back of the Terran's neck.
"Thank you Tawny," breathed Ashen as she hauled herself to her paws and saw the Golden Retriever fighting another Terran.
The Terran was holding a whip and continued lashing it against her once beautiful golden pelt. "Mama," wailed one of her pups as the other one held her back.
Ashen snarled and continued forward. She leaped in the air and sunk her teeth into the side of the Terran's flank. She tasted the flesh and tried to push him down. The Terran was strong and was not giving up without a fight. The Terran turned the whip in his hand before he lashed it against Ashen's shoulders. Ashen felt blood ooze out and she struggled not to yowl since if she did she'd release the Terran.
Suddenly the mother dog reared on her hind legs and pushed her front paws on the Terran's chest. The Terran finally fell backwards and Ashen turned her head madly and felt her teeth rip through the Terran's flesh. The Terran tried to lash out at the two canines with the whip but the more Ashen ripped his flesh with her teeth the more the Terran seemed to lose it's will. Finally the Golden Retriever clamped her own jaws on the Terran's hand. The Terran automatically dropped the whip and continued wailing.
When the Terran finally drifted off into unconsciousness Ashen released her grip and so did the Golden Retriever. "Thank you again," breathed the she-dog and Ashen noticed the intense crisscrossing wires on her chest. "I'm afraid I didn't catch your name."
"Ashen," she introduced with a dip of her head. "You?"
The Golden Retriever smiled. "Sadie," she answered with a dip of her head. She motioned for her pup and they bounded toward her. She lowered and licked a darker colored male Golden Retriever pup. "This is Rags." She then touched another pup that was the spitting image of her mother. "And this is Jubilee."
Ashen dipped her head to the pups. "It's a pleasure to meet all of you." She suddenly heard the wail of Whisper and realized something had happened. "I have to go!"
Sadie's eyes widened a bit in shock as more Terrans appeared from another door. "Go I'll cover you," she barked as she braced her muscles.
Ashen nodded thankfully and surged forward. She followed the sound of Whisper's wailing and looked to find her standing with her back toward the battle. Ashen slowed as she realized what she was looking at.
"No," breathed Ashen as grief sounded in her voice.
Whisper turned and sniffed as tears streamed down her face. She stepped aside a bit and allowed Ashen forward. Ashen forced her paws forward and sat down heavily. She struggled to look down and when she did she saw what she was afraid to see.
Pallid was laying with his neck tilted at a strange angle. There was a bullet whole in the side of his neck that was still oozing thick crimson blood. Ashen lowered her head and touched her nose to the wound. She then raised her head and looked into Pallid's dead and dark eyes. She sighed heavily and ran her pads gingerly over Pallid's eyes to close him. He looked a lot more peaceful that way despite his crooked neck.
"What happened," Ashen dared to ask as grief overwhelmed her and she had to stop herself from wailing to Starbound for answers.
"A Terran shot him before he stomped on his neck," Whisper confessed as her voice crackled.
Ashen hung her head and pushed her muzzle into Pallid's flank. "He wasn't going to make it out of here anyway," murmured Ashen, loud enough for Whisper to hear her. "You knew that, didn't you?"
Whisper bit her lip. "Yes I knew it but that doesn't make it any easier," she pointed out as she whiskered her tail and looked away.
Ashen composed herself and sat up, gasping a bit for breath. She felt like her group was falling apart. "I'll leave you two," she barked gently as she licked Whisper's shoulder. "Just make sure you don't stay too long."
Whisper nodded and cowered beside the cat who she had once wished was her mate. She took in his scent and sobbed into his fur. "I'm so sorry," she cried as she rested her paw on his. "You shouldn't have died like this!"
Ashen couldn't bare to listen to Whisper anymore. She looked away, pain showing on her face. Terrans were just as heartless as she had thought before.
Before she could move Grenade bounded to her side, his gun slung on his one arm. He continued to fire it and Ashen cringed every time it went off, the sound scaring her a bit. "We've held them off for the weak and young to get out," Grenade told her with determination still lighting in his eyes. "It's time for us to go."
Ashen looked and saw that only a few creatures were still fighting and there were only a few Terrans still fit to fight. She nodded to Grenade. "Alright," she barked as she forced herself to move her paws forward. "Let's go!"
Grenade threw the gun on his back and darted forward on four legs because he was quicker that way. Ashen followed him but suddenly Ashen felt something sear through her shoulders. It went through one shoulder and came out the other shoulder. She yowled as blood gushed out and she fell, her eyes flickering in agony. She clenched her jaw to keep from wailing.
"Ashen," gasped Grenade as he rushed to her side. He pressed a paw against her shoulders that were oozing blood from the gunshot. He tried to place as much pressure on the wound as he could but it wasn't doing much.
Ashen lifted her head slightly despite the pain and groaned. "Grenade," she rasped as she pointed a paw toward the other side of the hallway.
Grenade turned his head and saw that the remainder of the Terrans were just shooting at whatever creature they could. Grenade's eyes widened in terror and he sunk his teeth into Ashen's shoulder and hauled her to her paws. "Come on," he urged as Ashen gasped to breath. "We have to get out of here!"
Ashen understood and limped forward, wishing she could favor both of her shoulders. They finally managed to clamber into the lobby and Grenade pushed her forward. "Just a bit further," he growled as he banked hard but he was too late. A bullet connected with his ear and he yowled as hot blood dripped onto Ashen's face.
"Grenade," she fretted but Grenade continued forward, blood dripping into his eyes.
"I'm fine," he lied as he forced them both forward. They exploded from the lab and bolted into the forest. They didn't make it far before Ashen collapsed, pain showing in her eyes as she cringed.
Ashen suddenly realized something and pushed herself against a tree to steady herself so she could stand. "Dish," she howled.
When she didn't hear anything she realized he must be back in the lab. She took a step forward but Grenade darted in front of her, pushing her backwards. "Where do you think you're going," he snarled as he back arched.
"I can't just leave them in there Grenade, "cried Ashen meaning Whisper and Dish.
Grenade shook his head gravely. "Going back in there would be suicide," he pointed out and Ashen hated to admit he was right. "We just have to pray they make it out."
"But-," Ashen began but she was cut off curtly as Grenade lashed his tail.
"We can't do anything about it now Ashen. Now come on," he ordered as he pointed his muzzle toward the deep forest. "We have to find shelter and tend to our wounds."
Ashen frowned as she romped after Grenade. She stopped suddenly and looked over his shoulder, tears filling her shoulders. "I'm sorry Dish. I'm so sorry."
