After a long day of learning how to perfect their hunting crouches with Rift, Ashen and Somber were ready to curl in their nests for a long sleep. However, the sun hadn't gone down yet and Streak was insisting that they eat.

Somber had chosen a sparrow while Ashen had chosen a pitiful mouse. They sat together, and ate their prey quietly and stole glances at over where their father was sharing prey with Rift and Streak. The three had been inseparable since Mist's death but Ashen couldn't figure out why. However, she didn't ask.

Suddenly, the alpha of the back, a large dark gray and black male wolf lifted his head from the rock at which he ate at. "Slate," he called at to his beta.

"Yes, Pike," asked Slate as he lifted his head from beside his mate, Marua.

"Do you hear that," asked Pike as he continued to flick his ears. "It's coming from that way."

Slate rose to his paws and tensed his muscles. He leaned forward, sniffing the air. His pupils dilated and his fur bristled. "Terrans!"

Slate turned and howled a warning before a gunshot sounded and Slate fell to the ground, blood oozing from his chest. Marua yowled in grief and shock and she darted to her paws. Pike leaped down from his den and stood in front of Marua with his shoulders bunched.

"All wolves protecting the Whelps' Den and Retireds' Den," ordered Pike as his eyes darted around to his senior Fangs. They nodded sternly while Ridge, Cleft, and Minnow, the only retired wolves, bounded into their den as quickly as possible. They were retired for a reason.

Fern, the only pregnant she-wolf, hustled toward the Whelps Den. She pushed herself in and two large Fangs stood guard at the entrance, their muscles bunched.

Fog, Bound, and Meadow, the only Learning Fangs, bounded to their teachers' side. Fear lit in their eyes. They had fought before. They had fought badgers, raccoons, even foxes but never Terrans. Terrans were different. They had weapons that could kill a wolf in a heartbeat while they stood taller than three wolves standing on top of each other. They were perhaps the deadliest creatures known to wolves beside grizzlies.

"We fight and protect each other," howled Pike as he looked around to his pack. "These creatures need shown no mercy. If you get a chance, kill them."

Suddenly, at least fifteens Terrans erupted from the entrance, drawing their guns. One went off and a beautiful silver she-wolf named Ajar fell to the ground, blood oozing from her neck, her head craned at a strange angle.

Ashen suddenly darted to her paws, her fur standing on end in terror. Somber rose beside her, pushed his body against her to protect her. He growled as a Terran caught sight of them and prowled closer. His eyes widened a bit but he bunched his muscles.

Suddenly, Marrow leaped into the air and landed in front of his pups. "Leave them be," snarled Marrow but he knew that the Terrans couldn't understand wolf, or any animal for that matter. The Terran pointed a gun at Marrow's chest and Marrow froze.

"Dad," cried Ashen in fear as she pushed her head into Somber's shoulder.

Suddenly Rift launched himself in the air and plowed the Terran to the ground. He knocked the gun from the Terran's hand before he looked to Marrow. "Go!"

Marrow didn't need to be told twice. He turned madly and sunk his teeth into Ashen and Somber's scruffs. He turned and surged forward as gunshots sounded behind him. He surged into the Fang's den. He set them in the back and looked at them with round and terror filled eyes.

"Dad, what's happening," asked Ashen as she looked up to her father with round eyes.

Marrow lashed his tail. "Terrans are attacking. Those heartless creatures think that they're so much better than us!"

"What do they want," asked Somber as he lowered into a crouch. "What did we ever do to them?"

"We haven't done anything," assured Marrow as a bullet crashed into the end of the den and Ashen wailed in terror. "Now, just stay here until all of the Terrans are gone, okay?"

Marrow's voice crackled in terror but he continued to be as serious as possible. "O-Okay," both pups stammered as they looked at each other.

"Good." He looked over his shoulders as the Terrans advanced. "Terrans are disgusting creatures who only care about themselves. They lie and cheat and don't have the value of a pack . You can never trust them."

"We won't," vowed Somber as he worked his claws against the ground.

Marrow gave a nod before he sighed heavily. "Just stay in here and I'll be out to get you when this is all done. I love you both no matter what." With that he turned and bounded back into the thick of battle.

He surged into the clearing, navigating through bodies of dead and fatally injured wolves. He skidded to a halt as he saw a Terran standing in front of him. The Terran smiled evilly and drew his gun. Before he could fire Marrow leaped into the air and brought the Terran down. the gun was thrust out of his hand and Marrow sunk his fangs into the Terran's arm. The Terran screeched in pain before he tucked his hand into his pocket and thrust a knife into Marrow's shoulder. Marrow howled in agony and the Terran twisted it to that it shredded the flesh.

Marrow closed his eyes as a sick feeling rose in his stomach. He sunk his fangs deeper into the Terran's arm but the Terran then thrust the knife ever so deeper into his shoulder. He knew he needed a new tactic. With his good front paw he struck it out and his claws ripped through the Terran's neck. Blood and life ebbed out and the Terran fell limp.

Marrow released his grip on the Terran's arm and sighed heavily as he looked to the knife still embedded in his shoulder. Blood was oozing out and dripping on the ground in a small pool. It then mixed with the Terran's blood from his neck and it made Marrow nauseous.

"You alright," asked Rift as he leaped beside his friend. His eye was swollen shut from where a Terran had landed a nice punch. Blood was oozing from a nice sized hole in Rife's back where a bullet had struck. However, he still stood tall despite his injuries.

"Fine," panted Marrow with agony filled eyes. He looked at his shoulder and relaxed it. He grasped the knife firmly with his teeth and gasped a bit in pain. He then yanked it out, careful not to let it catch and tear any more of his flesh. He spat the knife on the ground and what seemed to be a volcano of blood gushed out. He smelled the awful smell from the knife and knew that his shoulder would probably become infected. Terrans didn't pride themselves in keeping anything clean in Marrow's opinion. "We're getting our tails handed to us here."

Rift nodded in regret. "There is no way we are going to survive this," he confessed as he watched another wolf fall dead at the feet of a Terran.

Marrow didn't want to think like that. He couldn't think like that with two pups but he wasn't blind to what's happening. "Then if we die, we die fighting," he told Rift with a gleam of determination in his eyes.

"Agreed," barked Rift as he tensed his muscles, ready to spring. Marrow did the same and they bounded forward. Rift sunk his teeth into the leg of a Terran and brought him down while Marrow gave the fatal bite.

While Marrow's back was turned a Terran pointed his gun right at Rift. He fired it and the bullet severed the top of Rift's spine from his skull. It killed him instantly and Rift fell to the ground, his eyes still open.

"No," rasped Marrow as he unhooked his teeth from the Terran's neck that he had pinned. He looked up and saw three Terrans with their guns pointed at him. He snarled as Terran blood dripped from his fangs.

One Terran opened fire and to Marrow's surprise it was just a stunner. He fell to the ground, feeling like he wast run over by an elk. He lifted his head and groaned in pain before he was hit with another stun pulse and the whole world went black.
