chapter forty-three. . . hail and farewell
◇
VERONICA FIDDLED WITH the bag of popcorn she had plucked from the pantry that belonged to Jonathan as he had tended to retrieving the Mortal Mirror from the Institute and which they had been waiting for. The woman had rested on the couch as her feet kicked up on the coffee table as she awaited for good news from her nephew, she favoured him for the reason being he was on her side, they were related and because of the darkness he carried which she loved.
As her concentration was on finish the bag of popcorn, Valentine's interest was on the papers scattered on the table as he awaited for good news just the same as his sister was. The rustling of the bag of popcorn had caused his eyes to roll as he turned towards the younger Morgenstern who he had hoped silence from and which had caused her eyes to peel from the handfuls she had been taking.
Veronica smiled cheekily towards her brother as she offered some popcorn just as the door to the apartment had swung open and being shoved into the room was Malia who had chains wrapped around her hands as Jonathan had followed behind her. The smile in which had been plastered across the pale skin's face had faded as she slowly begun to lose her appetite for her bag of popcorn. "That's not the Mortal Mirror." She told as she pushed herself to her feet to try and understand what had happened with Jonathan's time away from them.
"We need to leave." Jonathan concluded as he closed the door behind them to march over to the Soul-Sword in the corner of the room.
Valentine's brows furrowed. "What happened?"
"My position within the Institute was..." Jonathan hated to tell his father was the truth as he had promised hold of the Mortal Mirror, and which seemed to not have had been in possession has hoped. "compromised."
"Where's the Mirror?" Veronica and Valentine's attention had narrowed on Jonathan as they were seeking answers and it made Malia think of how she could break free of the chains that strapped around her back and the tape glued to her mouth so she couldn't form a scream. "I said, where is it?" Valentine questioned as he gripped onto his son's wrist.
"Malia, uh," Jonathan's eyes flickered towards the brunette. "she took it out of my pocket."
"You know, in all honesty, I would have figured Jace to be the only Shadowhunter capable of giving you a run for your money." Valentine snarled causing Jonathan to push himself away from his father. "It's only a matter of time before the Institute comes breaking down that door. See, I wonder...I wonder how they learned where you live, huh?"
"Okay," Jonathan snapped as he threw his bag back to the floor in rage. "being discovered wasn't part of my plan!" He barked causing Malia to flinch as she slowly backed away. "But killing you, it was."
