chapter forty-eight. . .
vows made

JACE HAD WOKEN up confused. He had fallen asleep beside Malia, a beautiful sight of her and now her spot was empty and cold as soon as he had reached for her. Jace pushed himself to his sit up before rubbing the sleep from his eyes to focus on his surroundings to spot the banshee who sat in the corner of the room within the armchair as her arms wrapped around herself where she had seemed to have had fallen asleep. The Herondale held heavy confusion as to why Malia had left the comfort of his bed to fall asleep in the armchair which had caused him to slide out of his bed with hope of getting answers from his girlfriend.

He had fallen into a crouch in front of Malia, resting his hands on either side of the armchair before he had lightly called for her name to wake her out of her slumber to answer the questions he had for her. Malia's eyes had slowly fluttered open before she had met the concern expression that had smacked its way across Jace's face and which had caused her to look out of the window to notice the sun creeping in. "Hey."

"Good morning." Jace greeted as he smiled towards her. "How comes you're sitting in the arm chair. Couldn't sleep or...?"

Malia's head lightly shook. "I couldn't sleep." She told before donated a soft smile towards the Herondale. "Since I've been back I've had one goodnight sleep. I-I don't know what's wrong with me. But I guess coming back from the death changes somebody."

"You can tell me the truth, Malia." Her brow rose as she questioned what the blonde had met. "Is it bed head? Or is it morning breath?"

Malia had snorted at the joke in which Jace had made about his morning insecurities. She hissed playfully as her fingers ran through the locks of his hair. "Bed head, sorry."

"Ouch." But he had dismissed as a laugh had followed before he had thought of the best way to make Malia feel at home again. "So, I was thinking, today maybe we could--"

"Find some answers about this mark?" Malia questioned as her eyes narrowed on the Herondale.

Jace's head shook. No. I was thinking, today, we could do something to celebrate your homecoming." He offered and which caused Malia to fall to wonder of what he had in mind and what would make her feel like she belonged again.

"Okay, what did you have in mind?"

Jace broke out into a grin. "How about we keep it a surprise, huh?"

MALIA COULD VAGUELY remember when she used to be on the ice, skating at Ferber Ice Rink. It was a memory far mundane and it felt strange walking in something like her past. A past which was a lie as Veronica had been lying to her all of her life. But yet she remembered seeing her clapping and cheering from the bleachers. It was such a great memory but it hurt her knowing it was a lie.
