Arin was wearing a white shirt and blue shorts. He would've liked to wear his pink shirt, but he still had some trouble putting on his clothes, so his parents had a lot of control over what he wore since they helped him get dressed. He was only 4, but already he wished he could have more control over his appearance.

His hair was short; his parents said that if it was too long it would just bother him, especially in the summer. He didn't argue, they were his parents and he trusted them. He still felt jealous when he saw his girl friends' hair, though. They had long hair, and they didn't seem uncomfortable.

Today was a sunny day, so they were going to the park. Arin was excited at first; he loved playing outside, but that soon turned to fear when he saw some boys playing in the distance. They were throwing a ball around. It looked fun, but Arin had never really fit in with the boys.

"Why don't you go over and join them?" his mum suggested, pointing over at the boys.

Arin held onto her hand a little tighter.

"I don't want to."

"Why not? They look nice."

"I'm scared."

His mum knelt down in the grass in front of him, looking into his eyes sadly. She smiled at him.

"Why are you scared, dear?" she asked him gently.

"Because boys never like me. They say that I'm weird because I don't like boy things," Arin confessed, looking down at his feet.

"Not everyone likes boy things, Arin. Everyone's different. Just go over and be yourself, because you're perfect just the way you are, sweetheart. Okay?"

She opened her arms to him and he came forward, hugging her. He felt safe in her arms, like nothing could harm him. He felt a little better after what she'd said, but the scared feeling was still there.

"Okay."

He moved away, looking over at the boys playing. Another wave of panic washed over him but he pushed it down, walking towards them. His hands were clasped together nervously as he thought about how to introduce himself.

One of the boys jumped up to catch the ball as it was thrown his way. As he landed he lost his balance and fell backwards, landing in the grass as the ball fell from his hands. It bounced away and landed at Arin's feet. The boy on the floor looked at him upside down.

"Hey, can you throw the ball back?" he called, getting up.

Arin bent down and picked up the ball. Instead of throwing it he walked over, feeling himself blush as he tried to speak.

"C-Can I play too?" he asked sheepishly.

To his surprise the boys' faces all lit up at his request.

"Sure! What's your name?" asked one.

"Uh.. I'm A-Arin."

"That's a funny name. So, it's like Aaron, but kinda different?" the boy ventured, tilting his head in confusion.

Arin thought about it for a second. He frowned to himself; that didn't sound right. That name was too... boy-like. He shook his head, an idea suddenly coming to him. Saying it out loud made him a bit nervous, but he remembered what his mum had said about being himself.

"No, it's more like Erin... I-I'm a girl."
