Chapter 80 - Monster

It was both far too soon and not soon enough when the night ended. Danny wasn't sure what time it was, only that he was pretty ready for bed at this point. He wasn't a big party animal at the best of times but this was enough for one night. The teachers filtered them all outside where they could either wait for their rides home or catch the school bus that had impressively agreed to run so late for this.

Danny held onto Arin's hand as they walked outside, wanting to savour her presence for as long as possible until Havve's parents showed up. They'd hired the limo for the trip there for dramatic entrance purposes, but Havve's dad had agreed to stay up so he could pick them all up and drop them home. He was a cool guy. He seemed to be running late, as was Kevin by the looks of it.

"I enjoyed tonight," Arin said beside him, "Th-Thanks for asking me."

"Like I'd go to prom without my girlfriend! And, uh, I'm glad you had fun. So did I."

He hugged her with one arm and held her close to his side in the cold night. Their group of friends congregated into a small circle as they waited for their respective rides. Ross even stood with them as he had heard the arrangement and was also catching a ride with Kevin. Despite Rachel's requests Brian was still going with TWRP and Danny since his house was on the same side of town. Rachel lived a little further away, and Brian didn't want to put Kevin into more work considering he was coming all this way anyway.

"Hey! Barry, over here!"

Danny's heart skipped a beat as he heard someone shouting from a distance. He gripped Arin's arm tighter and even noticed Ross's face change as he heard it too. The Aussie risked a glance over at the person shouting but quickly turned away with a frown.

"Damn it, why is he here?" he muttered just loud enough for Danny to hear.

"Yo, Ross!" called a second voice, which caused Ross to look up again.

Danny followed his gaze and spotted Barry waving, looking very smart in his suit. He'd never spoken to the guy but he'd seen him around with Ross occasionally, before...

"What do you want?" Ross called back a little coldly.

"Last chance to catch a ride back with us!"

"I told you no, Barry."

By now the rest of their friends had stopped talking and were watching the exchange. They all had apprehensive looks on their faces.

"Aw come on! We used to hang out all the time, what happened?"

"You know what happened. Just go home already." Ross was beginning to lose his patience.

"That's no way to talk to your friends."

Danny stiffened as the other person got out of their car and walked over instead of just calling out of their window. His taller frame went to stand by Barry with a smug look on his face.

"You guys aren't my friends. Especially not you."

"Yeah yeah, I know you prefer to hang around with weirdos," the tall one teased, and Danny had to fight to stay where he was.

"Quit it, Jon. Just take Barry and stop bothering us."

"Come on, I just wanna say hi to some old friends. Isn't that right, Arin?"

Arin physically started to shake in Danny's grasp and he pulled her even closer, securing her with both arms now.

This wasn't how tonight was supposed to go.

"Get the fuck away from her," he growled lowly.

Jon laughed, not taking the warning and starting to walk towards them. Before Danny could move the rest of the group moved to stand in front of him, Suzy at the head of the blockade.

"What is your problem?" she spat.

By now the entire school year was watching. Danny looked around but he couldn't see any teachers. They were probably back inside the gym or some shit, not doing their jobs. Arin was crying, and there was no one here to drive away the person who was making it happen.

"My problem is you bitches who think you can tell me what to do."

Suzy cried out as Jon pushed her aside, and suddenly Danny was having flashbacks to that day in the corridor. He should have dealt with him then and there.

A car horn beeped loudly nearby.

Everyone turned their heads to see a car, its window rolled down. Kevin poked his head out, looking cautiously between Jon and the rest of them. He spotted Suzy on the ground and frowned.

"Get in."

Everyone, including Kevin, stared at Jon with death glares. Barry looked scared by what was happening and started frantically pulling on Jon's sleeve to get him to leave it alone. Jon chuckled darkly and started to turn away.

"Fine. Looks like their ride's here."

Everyone took that as a sign to dash for Kevin's car and quickly climb into the back. TWRP and Brian looked at Danny questioningly. Glancing down at Arin, the decision was easy. He flicked his eyes to Kevin's car and his friends nodded understandingly.

Danny ushered the shaking girl to the car and everyone helped her into the back, trying to offer comfort and get her out of the situation. Her make-up was running and her wide eyes wouldn't leave Jon once she was out of Danny's grasp. He was about to climb in after her when he heard Jon say something to Barry, just a little too loud.

"She looks sexy in that dress. I just wish it was shorter..."

Suzy called out for him as he took off, but Danny barely heard her. She knew what could happen when he got too angry.

He shoved Jon, who's back was now turned, and watched as he barely had time to put his hands out as he fell onto the concrete. Danny pinned him quickly with his entire weight so he couldn't turn around and grabbed a fistful of his dark hair. With absolutely no hesitation he drove Jon's face down into the concrete, hard. He heard a cry of pain, but didn't care. He did it again. And again. And again. At some point he heard a crunch, and relished in it.

Many hands grabbed him from behind, trying to pry him away. As Jon was ripped from his clutches his silent rage became loud.

"SHE HAS NIGHTMARES BECAUSE OF YOU! SHE CAN'T GO OUTSIDE BECAUSE OF YOU!! SHE'S CUT HERSELF BECAUSE OF YOU!!!"

Barry carefully helped Jon up, but he could barely bring himself to his knees, let alone stand up. He turned to face Danny, and his bloody, bruised expression looked terrified.

It wasn't nearly enough. Danny tried to fight the hands holding him back.

"COME OVER HERE AND FIGHT ME! I WANT YOU TO FEEL WHAT SHE FEELS! WHAT I FEEL! YOU'RE A MONSTER!! A MONSTER, A FUCKING MONSTER!!!"

His head pounded and he hardly knew what he was saying anymore as he continued to shout. To wail. He didn't know when he started crying, or when an ambulance arrived, or when he was sat inside a moving car. His throat was raw and he couldn't muster any more screams. Only whimpers as he clutched Arin in his arms. She held him with equal desperation, and no one spoke a word as Kevin drove them all home.

This wasn't how tonight was supposed to go...

A/N: there will be one more chapter after this before the time skip.... I think. I might change my mind again
