< Arin's POV >

Arin waved from the front door as Dani finally left. It was a few hours later now, and she could smell her mum just starting to cook in the kitchen. She wished that Dani could have stayed longer, but she had to get home for her own dinner.

They'd talked a lot about nothing in particular, and Arin had even shown her some drawings (not from her current sketchbook, since she'd stupidly left it at the park). They'd exchanged numbers too, which was an odd comfort to Arin to know that she had Dani at her fingertips to talk to. That spot had previously been held by Suzy, so it was nice to have someone else there now. Arin just hoped she wouldn't be too annoying.

Arin watched until Dani's impressive mop of hair disappeared from sight before she went back inside. Seriously, how could that be natural? Upon closing the door her mum poked her head into the hall.

"Dani seems like a nice girl," she commented with a smile.

"Yeah, she is," Arin agreed, smiling back as she thought about it.

Dani, the girl who Arin had initially been absolutely terrified of, was actually really nice. One of the nicest people she'd ever met, in fact. She also somehow managed to convince Arin's mum that she didn't need a lift home, which was a massive feat in itself with how persistent she could be.

"Maybe next time she could stay for dinner, I'd love to get to know her better," her mum continued to muse, "How about you tell us all about her over dinner, hm?"

Arin blushed.

"Oh, I-I don't actually know her that well," she admitted.

"Well what have you been talking about for the last 3 hours?" Arin's mum raised an eyebrow.

"Just... stuff. Neither of us really talk about o-ourselves."

Arin's mum narrowed her eyes, seeming to study Arin. It made her feel uncomfortable, her skin went all hot. Then, the look vanished as quick as it came and her mum smiled again.

"Dinner'll be ready in 20-ish minutes," she informed, disappearing into the kitchen again.

Arin heard her start to hum contently and briefly wondered what had just happened. She shrugged after a while and made her way back upstairs to her room; she didn't want to let herself think too much about it. She was too fragile right now.

As she closed the door she heard her phone buzz on her bed where she'd left it. Sitting down she drew in a sharp breath when she saw a text from Dani.

Dani: it's cold, kinda wish I'd taken up your mum on that lift home now

Arin: you're cold? There aren't even any clouds out

Dani: do you see any meat on these bones?

Arin: good point. Sorry

Dani: why are you sorry? :0 are you a weather wizard??? Did you do this >:(

Arin: haha no if I was a weather wizard it would just be rainy all the time

Dani: you like rain? Ew weirdo

Dani: wait no I didn't mean it like that ABORT

Arin struggled not to laugh. Dani reminded her of herself in that moment, the way she backtracked her words in fear of offence, but somehow she managed to turn it into a joke. Arin should take some pointers.

Arin: it's okay

Dani: I didn't wanna accidentally insult you

Arin: you didn't, I actually found it funny :)
