With my new look, I don't think I'll ever get noticed or recognized. Well, erase the 'ever' maybe.
"Where will he take you?" Maddy asked me over the phone. I dressed as I attempted to do something new: doing homework and putting on my clothes for tonight. "We're just going to watch a movie," I said.
"Ugh, my brother sucks. He calls that a date?" Maddy scoffed.
"No, it's not a date, Maddy. We're just friends going to watch a movie," I told her.
"Yeah, right," she mocks. "Well, I'll go so you can put on that boots we bought yesterday." Wow. How did she know I was going to pick that? For once, I wasn't wearing a Crawford clothing. I know they're just clothes, but it feels different.
"Your date is here," I heard Landon knocked at my door.
"For the hundredth time, it is not a date." I holler from my bedroom to the hallway.
"Whatever, just hurry up." Landon said.
I put on a casual pink shirt with a vest over it and put on my boots and also a fur coat because it's really chilly tonight. This feels different and nice. It's like I'm an ordinary person, not as Lilian and not us a geek.
"What movie are we watching?" I asked when we got to his car.
"We're not really going to watch a movie," he muttered.
"Then what are we doing for tonight? Please don't tell me we are eating dinner at a restaurant," I muttered back.
"No, it will be a surprise," he says. After a long ride, Mason drove us in the middle of nowhere. So, this is his idea of a friendly date?
"What are we doing here?" I asked. He leaned over to unbuckle me up then hurried to my door and opened it for me. What a gentleman. Ha!
"We're going to see if you're good with your constellations," he smiled. He grabbed a blanket from the trunk and set it on the middle of the field. This guy cannot be serious. It's winter season and we are hanging out outside. Must be idiot season. Huh.
"But aren't you cold?"
"Ah. Perfect, you can cuddle with me," he grinned, leaning over. I want to. I could already feel the winter breeze hitting my skin. "Come on," he opened his arms up and waited for me to get in it. I lie next to him as we looked up at the sky. Yeah, constellations. You need stars and tonight, there weren't any.
"So, Mason, how will you test me how good I am with my constellations?" I asked. I like this. We're doing something didactic, except the fact that we can't exactly do so. Good idea but bad timing.
"I should have checked the weather first," he face-palmed himself and we both giggled. I really am liking this. I have wonderful friends like Mason and a caring brother. I can live my life freely here. No one trying to control me. If only, it was like this in Florida then I can call it a 'perfect' life.
The night went great. I had fun. We talked about what we will do next and make sure to double check the weather. He and I had a lot of things in common surprisingly.
"My dad," he starts another conversation. I think we're getting into personal talk. That's not good.
"Mason, you don't have to tell me right away." I interrupted him.
"Do you know how it feels like to be controlled?" He ignored me and continued.
In my head, I would answer 'I do know, and I hate the feeling.' I just wish I can tell him. "My dad and I aren't in pretty good terms. Right after my mom left us, he treated us like crap." I looked at him who was focused on the night sky. It's like I can feel his pain.
