Fish out of water

A/n: man I really love the Mermaid AU don't I? I'm going to take a bit of s different approach this time.

Au: mermaid reader.

You had abandoned your life underwater to live on land years ago, you wanted to escape the awful pod you were in, and so far no one had found out.

You'd had a few close calls sure, but nothing you couldn't fix. You were hired as a police officer after you studied in university for a few years, and that had lead you to working on the Kira case. You knew it was the work of a Death Note, all magic kind know about Death Notes. You definitely couldn't say anything, not with spilling your secret.

Today you were working around HQ as normal. Nothing interesting was happening lately, Kira seemed to be going slower at this point in time.

"Hey (y/n), what do you think about these guys?"

You looked up to see Matsuda was holding up some files on criminals.

"Pass them"

He slid them across the table, only to knock a glass of water over and making it spill all over your lap.

Shit.

"Ah! I'm sorry!" He said.

"It's fine, let me just go dry this off" you said, remaining calm.

You got up and left the room, as soon as you were out of sight, you booked it. You had to find a place to hide before you blew your cover. You ran down the halls, figuring you could hide in the storage cupboard, you got to the end of the hall and opened the door right as your legs morphed to fins and you collapsed onto the floor.

Although, it seems you took someone down with you, and a lot of tapes too.

"Ow..." you mumbled.

"What in the-"

Upon hearing that voice you instantly began to panic, you pushed yourself up and saw you'd landed right on top of L, who was obviously looking for some tapes.

"Sorry!" You exclaimed.

"It's fine- what are you wearing?"

You suddenly remembered that when you transform your clothes disappear and the only thing covering your top half was some scales.

And then you remembered the tail.

Suddenly being on top of L was the least of your problems.

"Oh my god- Uh-"

He pulled himself out from under you and as he sat up suddenly saw the long (f/c) tail connected to you. In an impulse reaction, he jumped and scrambled back, fearing what the hell had happened to you.

"I can explain" you said.

Suddenly you heard someone's voice from down the hall.

"Hey (y/n)!"

It was Light. You went into ultra panic mode and slammed the door closed with your tail, pulling yourself over to L, covering his mouth with your hand before he could say anything.

"For the love of Neptune please don't open the door" you whispered to yourself.

You heard Lights footsteps walk past and you relaxed a bit.

"Don't freak out, I can explain everything" you said.

L nodded and you let him go.

You shifted yourself to sit up, your tail flopped over the pile of tapes.

"Ok, I know I look like a skinned fish right now, and I'm kind of not wearing anything but scales but just let me explain" you began.

"Since when were you a freaking mermaid?! How do you even exist? How are you not dying from being on land... Wait you're not a siren are you? You're not trying to drown me?"

"Woah woah, calm down. No I'm not a siren and mermaids can survive on land as long as they drink enough water. The rule is, if you get wet, you grow a tail, of you're dry, you have legs. I don't really know how I exist, I just do, and I've been a mermaid my whole life. I left my pod to live on land because I couldn't handle how cruel they were"

L starred at your tail I'm fascination, the fear seeming to go away as he examined your fins.

"Please don't tell anyone, I'd be sushi if someone found out..."

"Ok... sure..." he said, mesmerised by your tail.

You giggled at his fascination.

"You can touch it if you want"

He instantly took the chance and ran his hands along your scales, it kind of tickled actually.

"Wow that actually feels real" he said.

"That's because it is" you replied.

His gaze went from your fluke, up your tail, up to your waist before his eyes landed on the scales that kept you censored.

"So mermaids just have scal-"

"Scaly boobs? Yeah, it's our way of censorship I guess"

"When does it go away?" He asked.

"When I'm dry, then I'll change back"

"And you can't control it?"

"Nope"

He looked very interested. Anyone would be if they just saw a mermaid for the first time. You had air dried in the time you were talking, your tail began to glow and in a flash, your legs were back. L looked so dumbfounded watching that.

It made you laugh, he was so amazed by it.

"Holy- and it's just gone? What in the-"

You stood up, pulling him up to his feet.

"Look, it's not that I don't trust you, but I'm kind of paranoid so I'll offer you this. If you keep this secret, you'll get a wish" you said.

"Mermaids can give wishes?"

"Only if you do something for them. In this case, you keeping my secret would be the favour"

He thought for a moment. He'd keep the secret anyway, but a wish could be useful. He instantly had two things in mind.

"I don't know... there's a lot to wish for..." he said.

"You only get one unfortunately"

"Well... if I only get one then... I wish that you'll accept my feelings..."

You took a second to let that sink in. So your feelings had been returned this whole time. You smiled, he didn't need to wish that, it had already come true.

"Wish for something else, that wish came true ages ago~"
