Hanahaki

Au: hanahaki disease. Hanahaki is an illness in which someone who falls in love had flowers grow in their lungs, they get feverish and start to cough up the petals. It can only be stopped if the love is returned. They could get the flowers surgically removed but it will also remove their ability to love. If left untreated, the roots of the flowers will puncture their lungs and clog their wind pipes and they'll internally bleed and suffocate to death.

L had been feeling a little under the weather lately. But it was the middle of winter so he brushed it off as a cold and continued to work. His throat was sore, he was extra tried and felt hot all the time and he was finding it harder to breathe. He would take medication but it didn't seem to do anything. But alas, he continued to work.

Currently, he was discussing the Kira case with the taskforce. There was something in the back of his mind he was completely unaware of, love. He was in love with someone. But he hadn't realised it yet...

He was about to get a terrifying wake up call... one that could risk his life.

"They seem to be killing more on weekdays, we already know Yotsuba are behind it but I don't think I can be any of the weekend workers..." he said.

"Agreed, they must just have people set aside for the weekend" Mr Yagami replied.

"Someone start looking at shift times for the employees an-"

He was cut off by something blocking his airways, causing his body to instinctively start to cough. Whatever was in his throat was really lodged in because he was sent into a coughing fit.

"L are you ok?" Light asked.

L couldn't reply, he just continued to cough, he felt like he was going to throw up.

And he did.

But something was different.

He dropped to the floor and red petals started to fall from his mouth, with each cough, more and more would end up on the floor. Everyone knew what this was, they just stared in horror.

When he managed to stop coughing and catching his breath, he started down at the flowers on the floor in terror. He knew exactly what this meant. It suddenly all made sense. The fever, the weakness, the sore throat... it was because of the flowers that were growing in his lungs.

L has hanahaki.

Rose petals covered the floor, it looked like you'd pruned a rose bush in the taskforce building. Everyone was silent, no one knew what to say. L reached out a hand and grabbed a handful of the petals, starring down at them in disbelief.

He wasn't even aware he was in love, and now he has hanahaki? Where did this all suddenly come from.

"L... please tell me this is a prank..." Misa said.

"I... wasn't even aware I was in love..." he replied.

This wasn't some joke, this was serious.

Misa got up and walked over to the petals, getting a closer look. When she saw they were roses, he knew exactly what it meant.

"I had hanahaki once... they weren't roses. This is bad" she said.

"Roses are the sign of a soulmate right?" Matsuda jumped in.

"Yep, when I had it it was daisies... that was for my first boyfriend who I'm still friends with today. That was just a friendship-lover relationship but this... this is the real deal"

"L you know how serious this is right?" Light said.

"If you can't fix this... Kira won't the reason you die... the flowers will" Misa said.
