Head canon: L has separation anxiety.

L was a distant person. Everyone always thought it was because of his job and the fact he had to keep his life shrouded in mystery. But it was more than that.

He was separation anxiety caused by his abandonment as a child, he pushed people away because he's scared that if he becomes attached, he'll not want them to leave and set himself up for heartbreak and many many panic attacks. And for the most part it works, but over the course of the Kira case he couldn't help but get really attached to you. It just kind of happened, it flew over his head and he didn't even realise he'd grown attached until he had his first burst of anxiety when you left for the night.

He's kind of figured out the gist of it. If you're in the same room as him, he's fine, you don't even have to talk, just as long as he's in the same room. If you're anywhere else in the building he's ok too, I little on edge but ok. If you're gone from taskforce for more than a whole day, que the panic. He never asked for this, but now he's stuck with it.

It was really late, everyone was still up working but L's moms was somewhere else. He'd managed to place himself in the same room as you to try and stay calm while his mind screamed of everything bad that could happen. He blankly stared at his empty document as he thought.

He wasn't just scared of you leaving, he was scared that he was coming off as clingy, creepy or uncomfortable. He was worried about what would happen when the case is over, and how bad he'd feel if you had to leave.

He just really wanted to slap his parents for making him like this right now.

You had noticed that L was a little moochy toward you and you honestly didn't care, you always just assumed it was because he found the rest of taskforce annoying or just because you got along beat with him. You had no idea it was because of separation anxiety.

He knew he had to tell you eventually, maybe that way you could both work out some kind of system. And that way you'd know why he sticks to you like glue.

Little did he know that taskforce had noticed his attention toward you and they had other ideas.

"He's got to have a crush on her! Why else would he be so clingy with her?" Misa said.

"I know but... I just can't imagine L falling in love" Light replied.

"Me too, but you gotta admit, they'd be pretty cute" Matsuda added.

"If you ask me he needs to just get a girlfriend anyway, the man has too much time on his hands and should really get out more" Aizawa said.

Taskforce wanted to know. They wanted to know so badly, they wanted the tea.

"Maybe I should ask him, help him actually talk to her about it" Misa said.

"Yeah go talk to him!" Matsuda replied.

Meanwhile L was sitting beside you working up the courage to explain himself.

"(Y/n)..."

"Yeah?"

He turned to face you.

"Do I come off as clingy or... creepy to you?" He asked.

"Not really, you're a little moochy but that's ok" you replied.

"Well... you should probably know..."

You tilted your head in confusion, not knowing where the conversation was going.

"I try to push everyone away because I'm scared to get attached to them. But... I've gotten attached to you, and the reason I'm so moochy is because I get really bad separation anxiety. I'm sorry you ended up the victim, but I can't really back out of it now. As long as you're in the same place as me then it's all ok... but when you leave for to long I get really worried and start to panic. I'm so sorry you ended up in this mess but I can't help it..." he explained.

It was like a lightbulb turned on in your head, everything made so much sense now. It made the way L acted so much clearer. He was so attached to you because he's scared of you leaving him.

"You don't have to apologise, it's fine. Look, if you get so worried when I'm away why don't you start coming with me when I go out?" You suggested.

"I would... I just hate going out. But I guess it's better than panicking all day... I dunno I guess it depends where you're going"

The blonde who had been listening to the whole thing turned on her feet and ran back down the hall to the rest of the taskforce.

"GUYS GUYS!" She said.

"What did he say?" Light asked.

"I didn't even talk to him, but I overheard him talking to (y/n). He's got separation anxiety and that's why he stays so close to (y/n). He said it's because he's attached to her"

"Attached Huh?" Matsuda smirked.

"I give it a matter of weeks, they'll be dating by the end of the month you watch. Maybe we could give them a push in the right direction..."
