I've come to the conclusion that we're the problem. Human beings. All of us.
Words can be heavier than gravity, weighing on us and pushing us further into the depression that's inside of us. Monty Green was a man that very well knew this truth, for he lived it every day with no falter. The very moment the piece of paper was placed in his hands, the words never left his mind. The cycle can't be broken as long as we're here. The words of a broken man, in a broken world. Monty was one of the only that began to wonder if the sadness allowed Jasper to see the world clearly, to see that the continuous down fall was evident.
Pointless rounds of the room that seemed to grow smaller each day. Monty grew into a zombie of lost hope, reciting the note word for word in an almost silent mumble as he faced another dying algae plant. Eyes squeezed shut, he uttered the quiet words "the cycle can't be broken."
That's when he was found, on the highest peak of a fallen watchtower at the edge of Polis. His eyes were stuck on the barren waste land of it all, searching for a hint of green amoung the rubble. Earth was dying. By Octavia's hand, Eden was destined to die. Hope was... dead.
Careful to not further crumble the wall, you managed your way by his side, eyes searching the distant look in his. You couldn't bring yourself to say anything, because nothing seemed appropriate until he himself broke the silence. Your hand found his, thumb drawing delicate circles against his skin. He squeezed your hand and let out a huff of air, yet his eyes never left the barren waste land.
"Everything is dying."
"I came looking for you. You're usually down there, just like you were on the ring; tending to your algae-"
"On the ring, it worked. At least we know that open space is a barren waste land," Monty's voice cracked, fingers dusting over crumbled rock. "earth is supposed to be different."
"I came looking for you- and found something." You spoke calmly. "You've done it, Monty Green." Though Monty couldn't just hear the words, for a spirit crushed as his had to see the life for himself.
Scrambling down the wall, Monty only stopped to offer his hand. Quickly taking it, you jumped the remaining height before taking off, dragging Monty closely behind you. Punching the code in, a shudder shot through his spine as he entered the grey walls of seemingly failed work.
"Come on." You urged, tugging on his arm as you moved through the lines of algae. Stopping at the aisle edge, you allowed Monty to see the tiny pink buds pushing into the open. He turned to you with wide eyes and an open mouth, unable to form a coherent sentence. "You've saved us once again, Monty Green."
