Dean took a deep breath "baby, i'm so so-"
I shook my head "i don't care. Dean, i really don't. You don't remember anything from last night, you don't remember if you slept with her or not, Dean."
He looked down.
Me "Maybe you should stay out of this case"
He looked at me with wide eyes "you can't be serious"
I nodded "i am. Listen, Dean, i'm not gonna ask you for anything, okay? Because i'm so close to my breaking point and i don't wanna break which means that i have to protect myself. "
Dean "so you're breaking up with me?"
I shook my head "i don't know. But all i know it that i can't look at you right now. i don't even wanna be near you right now which means that i cannot work with you on that case. "
Dean "so you're out?"
I shrugged "i don't know. But for now, i'm gonna do my work while you get my damn flask back. So either you come back with my flask or you don't come back at all"
DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY BUILDING.
The professor looked at the photo of the symbol "Fascinating. Truly. And actually, rather accomplished draftsmanship."
Me "Professor Morrison, we're hoping you can tell us what the symbol means. "
Professor "Ah, maybe. "
I raised an eyebrow.
Sam asked confused "Maybe? "
Professor " It's possible I could, even likely. Is the FBI offering suitable remuneration? "
Sam looked at me.
Me " The respect of a grateful nation and a good word with the I.R.S. "
Professor "Ah. Well, it appears quite ancient."
I nodded "Well, that narrows it down. "
Professor " A corrupted version of symbology associated with worship. Definitely an obscure regional script. Oh, this will require some research. "
Sam nodded "All right. Great. Well, uh, I guess we'll be seeing you tomorrow. "
The professor asked surprised " Tomorrow? I've spent entire sabbaticals on a project like this. "
Sam and i stood up.
Me " Professor! We have a serial killer on our hands."
Sam " Your government needs you, sir. "
Professor "Lady and Gentleman. My housekeeper needs a green card."
I looked at Sam.
--
Sam and i walked out of the office.
I breathed out annoyed " Good God, where'd you find this guy? "
Sam " He's supposed to be a top expert in his field. "
i looked down.
Sam stopped and turned to me "I want to call him, too, okay? Believe me. But he's not here. So we're settling."
I looked at him "I miss him so much"
Sam nodded and hugged me "i missed him too"
At the motel.
I was sitting on the sofa drinking my coffee when Sam looked at me.
Me "what?"
