Your POV
Evening has fallen and throughout the entire afternoon, we've done nothing dull but fish, swim, take turns riding jet skis on the lake and trek along the peaceful trail of the woods east of the area. What a day, how unfortunate that we'll be only here for a little while.
Everyone's pacing back and forth to prepare a bonfire and I'm in the middle of helping them gather firewood to use.
"Has anyone got a match or lighter?" One of the guys ask and all I hear is a resounding 'no'.
"I'll go check inside!" Willow volunteers and I assist the rest in stacking the firewood into a pyramid. We accomplish in doing so and Willow returns from scouting for something to light the wood. "I can't find anything in granddad's stock!"
One of the girls ask daringly. "Weren't any of you boys members of Boyscouts?"
One of the guys reply defensively. "I was but I kinda flunked out." The rest laugh at him but not out of mockery. Willow ponders for a bit before lighting up with what could be a realization. She rushes towards me and grabs me by the shoulders. "Why would we need a match when we have you?"
Right.
My eyes widen at her. "Seriously?"
"Y/N, if you can set an enemy on fire with a mere look, surely you can do the same with the wood. No one's gonna notice." She whispers in my face and I protest a little. "Uh yes they will. They're gonna wonder why the wood has set itself on fire."
She throws her head back and sighs heavily. "Please. Just graze two rocks together and make it as if you're using that to light the wood." It's actually not a bad idea. I could try. I give in to her request and grab two rocks from the ground, squatting next to the firewood. I simultaneously pretend to create friction between the two rocks and narrow my eyes at the wood to induce a spark, making it look like I've lit the wood by old-fashioned means. The tip of the pyramid catches on fire and begins to burn from there.
"Look boys, Y/N seems to be a better scout than you." One of the girls remark and it induces an amusing altercation between them. I chuckle and Willow pats my back. "Thanks for the sneaky save."
"No problem." After finding the solution to our little problem, we gather around the crackling bonfire with s'mores and stories to spare.
I look over the lake and it never fails to appease me. The moon is beautiful tonight as well.
As the rest engage in their own antics and jokes, I silently focus on getting my marshmallow gooey. But because of my intense, and I mean literally intense focus, I unintentionally provoke the fire to grow and consume the entire stack of wood. The rest draw back slightly from the sudden burst of heat and I furtively quell the flames by closing my fist.
I am gonna leave a bad impression on them if they knew.
Willow's eyes dart to me and I bring my forefinger up to my lips, shaking my head at the same time. I want to reassure her that it wasn't my intention and it relieves me that she instantly gets it.
"Holy crap, that was weird. Is there like a ghost around?"
"A ghost? Really?"
"Who knows. Fire doesn't just grow on its own."
"It was probably the air, genius."
I discard of my burnt s'more and tut at my little accident. Willow scoots over to my side and rests her hand on my shoulder, reassuring me for a second. An hour after our bonfire session, Willow takes me to the little dock in the lake to talk privately. We sit on the edge, barefooted.
