EVER SINCE ROGER had given Valentina his number at the bar two weeks ago, she had been a little back and forth on whether to call it or not. She had eventually decided not to, and now the note he'd given her was folded up in the top drawer of her dressing table, almost forgotten. Note the word 'almost'. There was something about the drummer that lingered in her mind. She wasn't sure whether it was his piercing blue eyes or his perfectly sculpted face, but there was something that she found intriguing.
It wasn't as if she was thinking of him nonstop, it was just for a minute or two every now and then. He would pop up in her dreams at night, and she was slightly put off as to why this random man had suddenly slipped into her life. She didn't need him there, and she was determined to get him off her brain completely. Emilia had told her not to ignore the signs of "clearly" being attracted to him, and she had instructed her to call his number. However, predictably, she had said no and reminded Emilia that love was dumb and that crushes only took up valuable time that could be spent working, focussing on herself or living her normal and slightly mundane everyday life.
"Are you ready yet?" Emilia called from the hallway of Valentina's apartment. Valentina sighed and continued to stare up at the ceiling, laying flat on her bed and listening to the Beatles sing at her from her record player. "Just a moment!" She called back, before reluctantly dragging herself up from her bed and taking the record off, placing it back in it's sleeve and onto her large shelf of records again. She looked at herself in the mirror of her dressing table, and frowned. Her under eyes were darker than usual, giving her a very tired look. She had been working hard recently, sketching out ideas for her sisters bridesmaid dresses as well as all the things she was already making at work. Not to mention, the fact that she had been dreaming about a guy that meant nothing to her which generally kept her up a little. She had to admit, she was a little exhausted.
Valentina pulled her long blonde locks into a ponytail, and layered some mascara onto her lashes in the hopes of making herself look a little more awake. She coated her lips in some pale pink gloss, and grabbed her beloved brown faux fur coat. She headed out the hallway where a smiling Emilia was waiting patiently for her friend.
Emilia had insisted that Valentina went shopping with her to find an outfit a date she was going on that evening. Valentina had agreed because she wanted to make her friend happy, but she knew that buying a whole new outfit just for some guy she may never see again seemed a little bit of a waste. However, she didn't want to dampen Emilia's excitement about her date with a guy she'd met in a coffee shop in a very cliche manor.
"Ready to go my love?" Emilia asked. Valentina forced a tired smile on to her face, "of course I am." They headed out to the shops, and Emilia dragged Valentina into many stores, trying on endless dresses and skirts, blouses and shoes. Finally, after she'd picked up some nice black platform heels and a necklace from another store, they headed into Biba to find a dress. "Hi, welcome to Biba" a young blonde woman smiled at them. "Hi" Emilia grinned back, Valentina also sending a smile in the woman's direction. "Anything I can help you with, or would you just like to browse?" She asked.
"Actually, I'm looking for a dress for a date I have later. Could you show me options please?" Emilia asked politely. "Of course dear, follow me" the blonde woman smiled softly and headed through the store to the back where there were rails after rails of beautiful dresses. Some very smart, some casual, some colourful and some very plain. "What sort of thing are you looking for? Fancy, casual, colourful?" She listed off options to Emilia. "Oh probably something quite casual but also sexy, you know? I'm going for black shoes and silver jewellery, so something that would tie in nicely with that" Emilia commented. "Follow me, I think I have just the thing that would really suit you" the woman smiled.
As Valentina watched the two talk about clothes and pick up various dresses, she studied the young woman that was helping her. She had mid length blonde hair and a thick full fringe, and a very pretty face. She had a good sense of style. Valentina looked closer at her name tag, which read 'MARY'.
Emilia had finally decided on a dress after trying on multiple and coming out of the fitting rooms to show Valentina each one, doing a twirl, wiggling her eyebrows at her and saying 'what do think?'. She had picked a pretty white skater dress with small yellow sunflowers printed all over. It buttoned up from the waist and had short sleeves, and Emilia look stunning in it.
"That's the one. You look beautiful. Casual but dressy at the same time" Valentina had smiled at her as she twirled. "Are you sure? It's not exactly sexy" Emilia giggled. "It doesn't need to be my love, you're more than just your body after all. And you look super cute" Valentina shrugged. "You always speak the truth" Emilia looked to Mary, "I'll take this one please." She said. "Perfect. It suits you well. I'll wait for you to change and then you can come and pay" Mary smiled before heading over to the counter.
Once Emilia had payed for the dress, the two women headed back to their flats and parted ways. That night as it got dark and Valentina was hit by a sudden lonely feeling, she decided to bite the bullet and just ring Roger. She had almost forgotten about him until he predictably popped into her head whilst she was alone, and she thought that perhaps it wouldn't do any harm to just call him once. She picked up the telephone that sat on the table next to her sofa and dialled the number that she read of the piece of paper which she had retrieved from her dressing table drawer.
After hearing the dial tone for a while, she was almost about to hang up when a voice broke the silence, "Roger Taylor speaking" his deep voice spoke. Suddenly Valentina froze, and asked herself what exactly she was doing. You'll only start to like him if you talk to him. You don't want to fall for someone, remember? No words could escape her throat, which seemed to have tightened as soon as she heard his voice.
"Hello? Anyone there?" He spoke again. Valentina bit her bottom lip. "Wrong number, sorry." She replied hastily and placed the phone down, a sigh escaping her lips.
