I made my way home slowly, trying to calm myself down. I was a puddle of emotions, scared of an emotional breakdown. I pulled into my driveway, before starting to sob again. I cried so hard and beat my hands against the steering wheel as I screamed and let my cries out. After about five minutes I cleared my cries, before looking in the mirror, making sure my face wasn't red. I evened my breathing, before walking into the house. Marshall was waiting in the living room for me, and luckily the girls were not in the room. He looked at me with hope, and all I could do was shake my head and look down. He walked over and hugged me, as I sighed and pulled away.
"I already cried enough on the way home and in the car outside the house. I'm hoping it'll be good until after I talk with Marcela." I said, and Marshall nodded.
"Emi and Hailie are taking a nap, and Lainie is in the room with Marcela. I can have Lainie watch tv in Emi's room and we can talk with Marcela." Marshall suggested, and I bit my lip.
"That's a good idea. I doubt I can talk to her on my own. Maybe give Lainie a snack or something to keep her from getting bored or anything." I replied, and Marshall nodded.
Marshall went and had Lainie go into Emi's room, before bringing her a bottle of apple juice and a bowl of cookies. He then brought Marcela out to the living room, after shutting Emi's bedroom door. Marcela sat down on the couch, as Marshall and I stood in front of her. I cleared my throat and looked over at Marshall. He nodded and I slowly looked over at Marcela.
"H-How's my Mom?" She asked shakily, causing my heart to shatter.
"Marcela, baby, w-we have something to tell you." I replied, and she looked at me with all kinds of hope and love in her eyes.
I looked over at Marshall, shaking my head and feeling like I was going to cry.
"Baby, your Mom, she didn't make it." Marshall said, and she shook her head with determination and hope in her eyes.
"No, you're lying. Mom wouldn't leave me. She loves me. She wouldn't leave me behind. You guys are lying." She argued, and I felt the tears fill up in my eyes.
"Baby, I wish we were lying. I'm so sorry, Marcela." I said, as tears began to fall down my face.
Realization, sadness, and a mix between heartbroken and hatred flashed through her eyes, as she began to cry and latched herself on to me.
                              "I-I can't believe she's gone! S-She left me! I-I will never forgive her! I-I h-hate h-her s-so m-much r-right n-now!" Marcela cried, as I held her close to me.
"You don't hate her baby, you're just grieving." Marshall said, and she shook her head.
"No! S-She brought this on h-herself!" Marcela exclaimed, as she wiped her eyes.
"You'll feel different later on, Marcela." I whispered, as she breathed deeply to calm herself.
"Where am I going to go? My Dad's parents don't like me. I don't have anyone to live with. I don't want to go to an orphanage. Please don't let them take me, Kori." Marcela pleaded, and I quickly shook my head.
"No, you're not going anywhere. I've already signed the papers saying I'm your legal guardian. We're going to pack your stuff tomorrow, and get whatever stuff of your mom's that you're wanting. Oh, your mom also had your last name changed when I signed, so now you're Marcela Winston." I stated, and she bit her lip.
"C-can you give me a nickname, instead of being Marcela?" She asked, and I nodded.
"What about Marcy?" I asked, and she shook her head and giggled a little.
"That sounds like an old lady name." She commented, and I laughed a little, as did Marshall.
"What about Cela? Like Stella, but without a T." Marshall suggested, and Marcela shrugged.
"I like that one." She answered, and I smiled.
"You could always go by your middle name, Winnie." I joked, and she quickly shook her head.
"No, I'm not Winnie the Pooh." She retorted, causing me to laugh.
I was glad she was smiling, but I knew she was still hurting inside. I knew she was because it hurt me as well. Once she was done laughing, she yawned. I smiled slightly and bit my lip.
"Cela, would you like to take a nap? You're tired from crying." I asked, and she nodded slowly.
"Please." She answered quietly, and I smiled.
"Of course. C'mon, Marshall can entertain Lainie for a little bit." I replied, before walking Marcela to her room.
She laid down in her bed and flicked on the tv, before covering herself up. I tucked her in and kissed her temple, before she closed her eyes. I sat in bed with her, running my fingers through her hair, until I knew she was completely asleep. Once I knew she was asleep, I slowly got out of the bed, walked out of her room, and silently closed the door. I walked back into the living room and was shocked to see only Marshall was in there.
"Where's Lainie?" I asked, and Marshall shook his head with a smile.
"She passed out on Emi's bedroom floor, so I picked her up and put her in your bed. I hope you don't mind." He replied, and I shook my head.
"No, it's fine. Seems to be a long day for all of us." I commented, and he nodded.
"How are you feeling?" He asked, and I sighed.
"Honestly, I still just want to curl up in a ball and cry, but I know I have to stay strong for my girls, especially Marcela. It's weird, yesterday she was just going to stay a few more days, and then today it was changed to forever. I love her like my own, don't get me wrong. I just- I didn't expect to lose my best friend, ya know?" I replied, and Marshall nodded.
"Yeah, I don't know what I'd do if I lost Proof. I think I'd die without him." Marshall commented, and I bit my lip.
"I just hope I'm a good Mom." I said, and Marshall nodded his head.
"You're a good mom, don't worry too hard. You just need to take baby steps, just like she will. It's going to take some time to figure out everything, but once everything is figured out you'll feel like it's your normal routine. Almost like I do with Lainie." Marshall stated, and I smiled.
He's right, I just got to take baby steps. Sooner or later, it'll get better...
