"Ashton, are you going to be alright with Emi, or do I need to bring her with me? Bridget said she'd make a room in the back for her if I needed to bring her to work with me." I asked my roommate, Ashton, as I fixed my makeup in the mirror of the bathroom.
"Kori, I've told you before, I have her for the night. You work in a bar, and you know for a fact you don't want her there." Ashton replied, causing me to roll my eyes.
"Ashton, this is a part-time job, meaning it's not every night, but if you have things to do or work to do, I can take her." I stated, and he shook his head.
"Go to work, Kori." He retorted, causing me to laugh a small bit.
Since it was eight o'clock, I knew Emi was getting ready for bed. I grabbed the small bit of cash I had on my dresser, before heading to Emi's room. I opened the door, and seen my beautiful daughter picking up her last toy she had laying on the floor. I quickly swooped her up in my arms, causing her to squeal and let out an adorable giggle.
"Mommy!" She exclaimed, and I grinned.
"You're supposed to give me night loves." I said, and she laughed.
"I know." She answered, before wrapping her petite arms around my neck.
I held her close to me, before she lightly pecked my lips. I smiled at her, as she laid her small head on my shoulder. She was my little princess, and I never wanted to leave her. Anyhow, I laid her down in her small sleigh bed, before covering her up and tucking her in. Gently pushing her black curly locks out of her face, I kissed her forehead and smiled down at her.
"I love you, baby." I said, and she smiled tiredly.
"I wove you too, Mommy." She replied, as I placed her small stuffed sock monkey in her arms.
Her eyes slowly closed, before she drifted off into dreamland. Once I knew she was asleep, I walked towards her door. Flicking on her small zebra print lamp, before closing her door slightly, only letting a small bit of a crack be seen. Once I was done, I headed to the lounge room.
"I'm leaving. She's asleep. Call if something's wrong." I told Ashton, before leaving the house.
I stepped into my old 67 Ford Mustang, I had inherited from my grandmother, before heading off to the bar. I really didn't want to work tonight, but I was only working from nine to eleven, and was being paid as if I worked for five hours instead of two. Anyhow, once I got to work, I begrudgingly stepped out of my car before heading inside.
All I could smell was the putrid stench of alcohol, sweaty bodies, and weed. Nobody was supposed to smoke in the building, but people still ended up sneaking in their weed and other paraphernalia that was illegal. I seen Bridget standing by the bar, which meant we weren't too busy. She was always one to being running around if we were busy.
"Hey Bridget, how's the night going?" I asked, and she smiled.
"It's going smoothly. Judging by the fact that we haven't had one bar fight, nor did anyone pass out so far, I'm thinking you'll be able to leave by ten." She replied, and I smiled.
"That would be great. Tomorrow is Saturday, and Emi wants to go to the park. I really don't feel comfortable sending her alone with Ashton, so I'd like to have enough sleep to be ready to go early in the morning." I said, and she laughed.
"Girl, I understand. When Marcela was little, all she wanted to do was go out on the weekends, and I couldn't do it all the time due to being over worked during the week." Bridget commented, and I smiled a bit.
"How's Marcela doing?" I asked, and she sighed.
"She seems to be doing fine. I know she didn't really know her dad, but now that he's dead, she really doesn't have a chance to have any type of relationship with him. His parents want nothing to do with her. I know she's twelve, but she still needs grandparents. My Mom is the only one she has other than me." Bridget answered, and I nodded.
"Well, if you ever need me to watch her over the weekend or something, you know I'm always here to lend a helping hand for you." I stated, and she smiled graciously at me.
"I know, doll. Anyhow, I hope you have fun this weekend, and take a load off. Maybe leave Ashton at home, and just have you and Emi go to the park together. Besides, doesn't he work weekends?" She asked, and I groaned.
"Girl! I forgot he works weekends! He was supposed to work tonight! Fuck!" I exclaimed, and she looked at me.
"Where is he?" She asked, as I threw my head down on the bar exasperatedly.
"He's at home with Emi. I told him he could tell me, and I'd bring her here." I stated, and she shook her head.
"That boy is going to lose his job if he keeps blowing it off." She said, and I nodded.
"I know, and that's our water and light bill money. I can't afford that on top of rent, insurance, medical bills and food." I replied, as she rubbed my back.
"You'll figure it out, honey." She commented, and I sighed.
Once the clock hit ten, she told me to head home. Luckily, I had enough time to stop for gas before the gas stations closed. I knew Ashton thought I was going to work until eleven, so I knew he wouldn't be worrying about me being out in the middle of the night at different places, even though in reality I am. I knew Detroit was a bad place, but I didn't think it was so bad...

A/N: I hope you guys liked this chapter. Normally I wouldn't write such a boring first chapter, but I needed to start it off with something more than just what is described to you in the book's description itself. Anyhow, thoughts on the characters yet?
Love you guys!
