Chapter 1

The 16th moon birthday had arrived.

I stared up to the crystal blue moon, it was positioned directly above me. Even in the water you could make out the clear craters, the moon had a hint of silver in it like it always did reflecting back into the water.

It was high above the ocean and clear to see in the human world. My brother Cato, had waited for this day the minute he heard about it when he was a little merling. I waited patiently for my mother to call me to the Quintainence hall to when the moon chooses my destiny and my new family, which would happen to the other Merfolk of the age of 16.

The Quintainence hall was right above the moon, high in the sky and hidden in plain sight. It was where the moon would decide our fate and what we have to do to reach to it, but the Merfolk had 6 families. Aqua, Coral, Citrine, Opallia, Kelphine, and Onyx. My brother and I were in the Aqua family, we were referred to Odio's which meant boring to them.

As I continued to stare up to the moon, thinking of my new family it's pretty clear where I would belong. Usually with the Onyx, they were the most stubborn and so was I but next to my brother, we were complete opposites he was kind whereas I could be stubborn and extremely bossy.

"Lyla Marina!" My mother screamed from downstairs "We are leaving without you!" I huffed when she shrieked, I swam quickly towards my mother through the windows to find her right by the door. She was a Blue Blossom, her colour was blue and yellow so she could fit into either family of Aqua and Citrine.

"Sorry!" I said coming through the window.

"Lyla Marina, how many times have I told you to not come through that window. It's so common!" She shrieked.

"What if I like being common?" I snapped.

"You won't, don't ruin my reputation for this. We have high members on our Aqua family side" She says.

I folded my arms and swam and viciously towards the hall, my brother tried to swim up to me.

"Lyla, when we get chosen. I hope we can both get Aqua, I don't know how I can survive without you" Cato said to me swimming "Even if you are stubborn"

I shrugged my shoulders "That's if we complete our quests Cato, and I doubt that I will be Aqua most of the family hates me" I tell him, as we slowly start to approach the hall. Cato stops and swims ever so slowly that makes it hard to swim with him, he was afraid that the moon would tell him he wouldn't be part of the Aqua anymore.

By the time we reached the hall everybody was starting to pile up, my best friend Echo was a Opallia, the colour of white and silver for which my brother had devoted his love to her yet my best friend failed to see it, "Lyla! Can you believe the day is finally here? I can't wait to get out of that hell they call Opallia" Echo said.

"As do I Echo, maybe we can go to Onyx together" I tell her.

"No way Ly, they resemble sharks. And sharks are their mascot" She says.

I smiled and swam to the endless chairs that lined up with the 16 year old Merfolk and their parents, we took to our chairs and sat down while our family leader Jonas spoke about our destiny.

"Mers" Jonas began "The 16th moon has been called upon our young once again, where they will enter the new world as new citizens to their new society"

"We shall now begin the ceremony. First up" Jonas began.

I shrank back in my seat, the names were called and most of the people had got their family except for one so far named Cordelia who had gotten Lotus, which was a Citrine or a kelp and she was originally a Opallia. Her family cried and and I lowered my head down. I heard a girls name be called from the Onyx "Nixie Belladonna".

Nixie Belladonna, one of my few enemies, she was as stubborn as me but worse. She was evil and cared only for herself, I partially liked her life but loathed her at the same time. She was full of mystery and recklessness, I wouldn't be surprised if the girl would be a full fledged Onyx.

The moon raised above her and then the water started to change, "Gilded"

Gilded, that was the category everybody feared.

They were the colour of gold and harnessed all power, but it was dangerous to become one of them. You had to travel on land and complete the task,my aunt, was to become a gilded but failed in a quest and never returned back to the ocean.

"Maya Corolla" The girl was a Coral "Gilded"

More talking slowly started to turn into shouting but Jonas carried on, another girl from citrine was a gilded.

But then it was Echo's turn, she slowly swam to the middle of the room and then with that the moon slowly raised above her Jonas called out "Gilded!"

Then I realised a pattern had started to form, one from Onyx, one from Coral, One from Opallia, and possibly the girl next could be it. As the minutes came by a Kelphine girl had been chosen as a gilded, the Aqua girls and the Citrine girls started to wonder if it would be them. As my name drew closer the Citrine girl was named Addison, the Aqua girls started to tense.

"Lyla Marina Silverfate" Jonas called out.

I rose from my place, the other chosen ones had stayed to one side, the gilded girls had stayed behind the stands watching from a distance. I swam up from my place and looked at Cato, he smiled at me and with that I swam up towards him. Jonas smiled and I stood high above me.

'Just don't let me be Gilded' I thought.

It started to the rise and around me the bubbles formed, Jonas took in a deep breath and waited for it to happen.

"Gilded" He called.

I froze on the spot, the Merfolk Rose from their chairs and started shouting "ITS THE GILDED QUEENS PROPHET!" Somebody shouted.

There were 6 of us, 6 families, 6 future queens.

That was if we survived.
