Chapter 2

"Gilded haven't existed for over 400 years" Jonas began to tell us in hush voices.

After my name was called, hell had struck, like it had before the suspicions rose. From it the fellow Merfolk flee as they could from the hall and returned to their homes. Jonas knew the most about about the Gilded. "But over the 400 years we have had some gildeds, your aunt, Lyla. She was chosen but she failed in attempt and lived in the human world,

"There have been many prophets , but yours is the strongest and most feared. 6 mermaids, from each family , must unite in order for every one of you to become the gilded. Each of you plays a part of getting a step closer to becoming a gilded. You all must leave by the end of the day and find the puzzle" Jonas told us.

"Puzzle? What sort of puzzle are we talking about?" Addison asked.

"The Gilded Tablet! Each of you must find a piece of the puzzle on the land that the humans call America, Lyla" He looked towards me "Yours is the most important, you must find the Silvershell necklace. It has been lost for over 20 years. All of you need to leave tonight, but you must return within the next full moon and place the tablet under the moon to change yourselves"

I looked up at Jonas "What will happen if we don't complete it?" I asked.

He huffed and his eyes said it all "You will remain as a mermaid but you cannot return to us. Even we have tried to change it, my daughter. She was to become one, but failed. I havent seen her in 10 years" Jonas eyes started to become watery, his tears floated around us. I had heard of Jonas's daughter a girl named Deedee, she was my mothers friend but she never returned back to us in time for the full moon, her family was left heartbroken and Jonas onwards changed. He always cared for my family, supported my Mother when Father left. But those days are gone.

I started to think if it would happen to us, i would be away from Cato. At least he could still be a Aqua, he would be a Lotus enjoying the pure sun and smothering in the waters. But away from him, was something I wasn't ready for I needed Cato and he needed me.

"We need to travel as soon as possible, and we need to complete this quest! We all have something we will lose and for me thats my brother! We all have family and we will get that tablet if it kills us!" I shouted.

"Calm down Catfish" Nixie huffed "You sound worse then the seagulls and shellfish"

"Nixie, your stubbornness cannot overcome you, the Merfolk of Onyx will but their trust in you. In order for that to happen you must control your behaviour after what happened last year" Jonas told her.

Nixie started to blush, we knew what happened. Nixie travelled to what the humans call Italy and joined a group of Mer called the Selk, for which the played tricks on humans, idiot pranks scaring them and pretending to sink their boats. Her mother found her and took her back to Bermuda where Nixie is still in shame today.

"What happened should be none of your business Jonas, we all of secrets and things we regret" She says.

I swam towards Nixie and put my hand on to her shoulder "It's in the past Nixie, we know you are stronger and will be when you become Gilded" I tell her.

She smiles, it's the first time in months she actually has, Nixie moves away from Jonas and closer to us.

"Let's leave"

And with Nixie swimming away from us, we followed.

We swam, only back to our home to gather our things. Cato wasn't pleased that I had to leave him, I hugged him and then midnight was creeping before us. We had decided to swim all night and find a pod island by the morning. Echo swam by me as we went, Addison swam alone looking up to the sky that was above us. Every so long we reached up for air and this made us unable to talk under water but yet could breathe.

"Why does it have to be Lyla who gets the main piece?" Nixie mumbled.

The Kelphine girl Melody nodded, I shot her a warning look and decided to travel to the closest island to what the humans call America. I had overheard and splashed water over her with my tail.

"Because I might be the leader?" I said sarcastically.

"Does anybody really know what we are looking for?" Echo asked as we looked at the early sun, it shone brightly above us the day was slowly turning blue in the sky and with the tints of orange and red. My face had a slight burning sensation from the heat as we had to transition ourselves from Marine to tropical waters.

Maya looked at us and flicked her tail extra hard in the water, setting a ripple of bubbled behind us "The tablet pieces. Apparently all of the pieces are in the shapes of different sea creatures or objects, with the inscription on it"

I looked up at the sun, and saw the early morning approaching us. Time was running out.
