Chapter 6

Zach's POV

It happenened, my mom was right.

What he said wasn't crazy, the necklace truly was magical. I had gotten up early the next morning to make sure it was real, I had put on my glasses to be certain but I could see clearly now. When I got up early I had poured some water over myself to be sure, then I flung myself back into my bed and it happened.

A tail of silver and a very dark blue, my dad was fast asleep downstairs in his little science room in the basement. Nobody was in the house, I stared down at my tail and flicked it to see if it was real instead of a dream. But it hurt, with that I quickly called my best friend Luke, he didn't answer but I left a voice message.

"You are real" I whispered to the tail as i dried off.

When I was fully dried with no tail I grabbed laptop to look up mermans. The necklace I had worm ever since I was little and never been taken off, not even for school. Still on the same golden chain with the small seashell piece attached to it. It was the only thing I had left of my mom, the one she found 20 years ago, but after 4 years of keeping it she gave it to me.

I had a call an hour later from Luke, he was outside my house as he always was afraid to knock on the door and speak to my dad. I quickly ran down the stairs and opened the back door to him "Luke, I'm not crazy. And you have to keep what I'm going to show you a secret" I say to him.

Then I quickly guide him to the pool and jump in quickly, my legs disappear and my blue and silver tail reappear again. Luke's hair stands up like it always does and he kneels down beside the edge of the pool, "Wow" he says.

"That all you got?" I laugh at him.

"A fishy friend?" he says.

I climb out of the pool and dry off, once I'm fully dried we sit by the pool and I tell him how it happened "It was the necklace all along, on the night of the full moon I went swimming for the tryouts of the swim team. But as I was right under the full moon my necklace glowed and my legs disappeared, then my tail appeared" I tell him.

Luke smiles and puts his legs in the water leaving me to keep my legs tooked into the side of my body. "Well whatever you are, this will make you noticed by Shayla" He laughed.

I gave him a glance and kept a stern face "Luke, we cant tell anybody, and dont get me started on Shayla. I dont like her, even if she likes me. I wouldnt give a damn if she had all of the cheerleading squad behind her and for them praying for me to ask Shayla out"

Luke laughed and and went back to my bedroom, walking very quietly around the house. Once we got to the top of the stairs my door was still open wide with my laptop still on, i stared at the laptop. Still left on with a picture of my mom on the screen "Its been tough, these last few months. She just died, just like that and i never got an explanation of the necklace"I whispered.

He nodded and i grabbed my laptop from the side, looking at my mothers picture i typed in merfolk. If my mom had been here, she would tell me everything i need to know about Merfolk. As she had studied merfolk and mythology when she had me and never stopped working.

I continued to stare at the infomation that came up on the first page i pressed on to. A page about how merman and mermaids originated, i scrolled through the infomation with Luke playing with my swimming and surfing trophies. I switched off my laptop and walked up to where Luke stood, looking at all of my first place trophies and medals, plus the odd 2nd place medals.

"So you gonna give this up?" He asked as he put my first place surfing trophie back on the shelf.

I shrugged "I kinda have to Luke, i wont be able to surf with a tail and this must be kept a secret. And that means no more swimming, or surfing, or fishing for that matter if im with my dad" Luke nodded and then it was agreed, kept our little secret. I knew my dad wouldnt be happy about me quitting the swim team as he was the coach and for surfing too.

"Well, how you gonna cope at school? Science with test tubes full of water? Gym outside when its raining? Thats going to be alot to juggle, but i help you out bro" He says.

I smile and then as we look through the websites the hours start to pass, and soon the morning approches us.
