I remember being equal parts pissed and amused over what he said that night.   I caught his sound byte when it aired on the 11 o'clock evening news.  I didn't want to intentionally go out of my way to get back at Aaron, and I definitely wasn't interested in having a rebound relationship with Zac – or anyone - at that point.  But when he said I was tough and I'd be just fine?  Well, I started to believe it too at that point.

The next morning, I was sitting in a makeup chair while I read through my lines and the hairstylist – Allison – curled my hair.  I was balled up in a chunky knit sweater and sipping tea. Overnight, fall had arrived and there was a definite chill in the air.  This was my favorite time of year in New York - when the temperature in the subway became bearable and the tops of the trees in Central Park began to turn golden and burgundy.

I heard the door to the trailer open and close and glanced up into the mirror. There was Zac, wearing a winter jacket and beanie with his backpack on.  He was holding a bouquet of flowers in his hands.

"Oh my. It's not that cold out," I snickered at him.  He looked ridiculous.

"I was born and raised in Southern California, remember?"

"You poor baby.  You'll get used to it," I replied, pretending not to see the flowers he was holding.

"I sincerely doubt that," he laughed.  "Allison, would you mind giving us a minute?"

"Sure," she replied, setting the curling iron down on the counter in front of me. "But, make it quick – we can't have you guys getting to set late again."

Zac waited until she left the trailer.

"These are for you," he said handing the bouquet to me.  I sat my script on the counter and accepted them.

"They're beautiful.  But you didn't have to do this."  The flowers were a beautiful combination of fall-colored roses and carnations.

"I know. I feel really bad after what happened last night.  I got caught up in the moment at the game and I didn't think about how it might make you feel.  I shouldn't have done that and I'm sorry."

"Well, thank you.  For the flowers.  I don't think you have anything to be sorry for, but it's more complicated than that, Z. I want us to talk about it, we just don't have time right now."

"Ok," he replied and I could hear the disappointment in his voice.  "But we're Ok?"

"We're Ok," I replied.  I stood up, and to his surprise, I kissed him softly on the lips so he knew I meant it. "After we're done for the day, let's go grab dinner somewhere?  We can sit and relax and talk?" I asked, looking up at him. My lips were close enough to his that I could feel his breath on them.

"Yeah," he replied eagerly.

"Ok then," I kissed him quickly again as Allison came back inside.

"I'm really sorry, we need to get going," she said with a slight hint of Southern accent in her voice.  "Everything Ok in here?" she asked.
