Before I left to go to Kentucky for filming, I had two final press stops for The Greatest Showman - one at Ellen and one at Jimmy Kimmel Live. After getting off to a slow start at the box office, things were on a roll for the movie and the soundtrack was nominated for a Golden Globe.
Things definitely hadn't settled down for Jess or I as news of our engagement continued to dominate headlines. I knew that would be the topic of conversation as I made the talk show rounds. The only thing I was nervous about was the inevitable question people ask when you announce you're ready to spend the rest of your life with someone...when are you going to be ready to have kids?
Of course I wanted us to start a family and of course I was disappointed by how our conversation in New York turned out. But, after the initial shock and hurt wore off, I realized she was right, at least for the time being. Starting a family wasn't something we could jump into right away and we had enough balls in the air that we needed to juggle at that moment.
We stood in the driveway of our house that morning as the sun beat down on us and said our goodbyes before we both left for "work."
"Hey! I love you," I reminded her as I stood outside a chauffeured car that was sent for me.
"I love you more," she teased while she dug around in her tote bag for her car keys.
"I'll see you later at Kimmel?"
"Yes. I'll head over as soon as I'm done with these interviews," she replied.
She was beginning the hiring process for her West Coast office and it was great to see her getting back into her work groove as she settled back into LA life.
"I'm gonna get all sappy and disgusting when I talk about you," I teased her.
She responded by playfully rolling her eyes and scrunching her face at me.
"I'm so lucky," she replied as she finally located her keys.
I wasn't sure if she was being serious or sarcastic.
"Not as lucky as I am. Have a good day at work," I said as I gave her a long, slow kiss.
I separated from her and she returned, "I'm serious. I don't think I've told you that in like...three days. I am so lucky I have you. And I love you," she said as her emerald eyes sparkled at me.
I hadn't had quite enough of her, so I went in for one more kiss, dipping her down and really making it count.
I hopped in the car waiting for me before she could process what happened. I watched as she touched her fingers lightly to her lips before she got in her car.

"My next guest is adorable beyond words and stars in the new musical The Greatest Showman. Please welcome, Zac Efron," Ellen introduced me as the audience - filled with almost all women - squealed at an unimaginable volume. I made my usual entrance and waved to the crowd before I sat down.
We started things off light, discussing the movie before Ellen went in on the personal questions.
"So, a lot has happened since I saw you last," she said as a selfie I had snapped of us on one of our weekend visits went up on the screen behind me.
