"You about ready to go, beautiful?" I asked her as she sat on the bathroom counter, pretzel-legged, while she applied makeup in the mirror.
"Almost," she replied as she swiped some sort of powder across her face.
"You already look perfect," I smiled at her while I leaned against the door frame of the bathroom and crossed my arms.
"I love you, but I look like I've been up all night," she laughed back at me.
"Hey now, you're the one who woke me up in the middle of the night," I winked at her.
She was adorably tiny as she sat on the counter, squinting in the mirror as she applied more makeup.
"Oh, I'm aware I'm the guilty party," she winked back at me. "But now that I'm thirty, I get dark circles and bags under my eyes," she smirked as she took out a tube of bold red lipstick.
"Hey! If you put that on, I won't be able to kiss you like I want to," I pouted.
She paused before putting the lipstick back and opting instead for lip balm. I walked over to the counter and stood behind her, gently brushing her perfectly wavy hair over one shoulder. I placed my hands on either side of her shoulders and dotted gentle kisses along her collar bone, before eventually circling my arms around her and resting my head on her shoulder.
"Why didn't you change your name before? When you were married?" I asked, making eye contact with her in the mirror and watching her measured, but shocked reaction.
"Um...well, I guess because I was already so well-known. And there's no one else to carry on my family name...it's just me," she said flatly as she paused. "And part of me always knew our marriage was only going to be temporary."
"So are you going to change your last name to Efron when we get married?"
"I haven't really given it much thought. Maybe? Maybe I'll hyphenate?" I don't know. Is it important to you? That I change it?"
"Kind of?"
"Well, we've got lots of time to figure it out."
She was changing the subject, and I could tell by her reaction I didn't want to push her.
"I wanted to talk to you about something else," I leaned back against the door frame as she continued her work.
She hesitated slightly as she set down an eyelash curler.
"What's going on?" she asked as she spun around, letting her legs dangle off the counter.
"I know I said we should go to my dad's, but I think I should take this one on my own. He...uh..."
"He's still mad at me," she said matter-of-factly. "And he probably doesn't even know we're back together..."
"Not unless he's read about it," I sighed. "He'll come around, eventually. You know how he reacts to things though. I don't want you in the crossfire on this one."
