It was a bit of a drive to downtown San Luis Obispo and once we arrived, Starla parked her car on the street a few blocks from the tree lot. We got out of the car and walked along the sidewalk among unsuspecting passersby and Zac placed his hand on my hip, sliding it across the outside of my coat, ending by holding my hand and intertwining his fingers in mine.
We held back a few paces behind the rest of the family, enjoying the opportunity to be close to each other in the open. We walked past a café with a sign out front that said 'Mulled Apple Cider' in cursive script.
"Oh, apple cider! One of my favorites," I said excitedly as I turned to Zac, "Do you want any?"
"Of course," he replied. "Anyone else?" he offered.
"Nah, we're going to go on ahead. Catch up with us later?" his dad replied with a wink.
"It's cold out," Zac said as he we walked inside the café and got in line.
"Here," I said as I took a gray beanie out of my purse – my paparazzi disguise – and placed it on his head, pulling to down so it covered his ears. I paused and stood on my tip toes before I pulled him in for a soft, slow, kiss as our cold noses rested against each other. It was our first full-fledged, out in the open, in public, not trying to hide from anyone, kiss.
"Can I get you anything?" the girl behind the counter asked us, interrupting the moment.
"Yes, can we get two mulled ciders please?" Zac asked as he took out his wallet.
"Sure thing," she replied, not looking up from her register. "That will be $6," she said as she accepted a $20 bill from Zac, finally looking up at him.
"Oh! Oh my! Oh my god! You're Zac Efron! Oh my god!" she shouted.
"I am," he said as he placed his finger over his lips, silently shushing her. "But, we're trying to have a discreet, quiet visit," he said.
"Oh my god! And you're...you're Jessica Vanderbilt!"
"I am," I smiled in return. "What's your name?"
"Mine? I'm, I'm, uh Molly? My name is Molly," she stammered.
"Hi Molly, it's really nice to meet you," I said.
"My shift is done in a minute. Would you mind taking a picture with me?" she asked Zac.
"Of course," Zac replied. We waited at the counter for our ciders and then walked outside with Molly when she was done with her shift.
"How do you like SLO?" Molly asked me.
"It's beautiful so far. This is my first time visiting," I replied as I looked slyly at Zac. I took Molly's phone from her.
"Are you dating?" Molly asked, not being shy at all.
"Do you think we should?" Zac asked her as he smiled at me and put his arm around Molly.
"Oh my god! You should!" she practically squealed.
"See, our friend Molly here thinks we should date," Zac said.
"Well Molly, you'll be the first to know if he wears me down," I laughed. "Ok, smile!" I said as I held up her iPhone and took several pictures. "Do those look Ok?" I asked as I handed the phone back.
"Amazing! Thank you both so much!" she said. "It was nice to meet you both!" she said.
"It was nice to meet you too, Molly," we both replied.
Zac took hold of my hand again and we headed off towards the tree lot.
"She's going to post that picture all over Instagram you know," Zac laughed.
