The countertop was littered with flecks of flour, sugar, and various ingredients that had yet to be used. The clustered mess was evidence of the activity taking place in the kitchen. "Next we need two eggs." You instructed, reading the recipe off your phone. "I got it." Jin reached for the eggs that had been laid out, cracking them into the dry mixture. "Okay now mix." Jin hummed in acknowledgement, working to combine the golden eggs with the powdered ingredients while you began chopping fresh strawberries for the topping.
You and Jin were best friends and shared a love for all things food. You've always enjoyed being in the kitchen and creating new dishes, so you decided to major in the culinary field together, maybe open a restaurant one day. It was something the both of you had discussed in the past, dreaming of a future where you could have the career you'd always wanted.
Today in class, you were making a simple, yet classic, strawberry shortcake. Jin poured the batter into a pan, smoothing out the surface before sliding it into the preheated oven. The strawberries you had chopped up were scraped off the cutting board and into a bowl where you sprinkled some sugar on top to sweeten them up. "Mmm!" Jin hummed, observing over your shoulder as you mixed the granules with the bright berries. "You want some?" You offered, to which he nodded eagerly, always ready to be the taste-tester. Grabbing a spoon, you scooped up a small bite for him, watching his enthusiastic reaction. When Jin ate something delicious, his expression said what words couldn't. His brows would furrow and he would let out the most adorable noises.
The remainder of the strawberries were placed into the fridge to keep cool until the cake was finished baking. To kill time, you and Jin started cleaning up the work area, taking your dirty dishes to the sink to be washed. "Sometimes I can't believe we're here." You said, turning the faucet on. "Most people only fantasize about chasing their dreams, but we're here taking the first step towards ours." Jin smiled, grabbing the dish soap and drizzling it over the dirty mixing bowls and spoons. "It does feel surreal, doesn't it?" You nodded, washing each dish. "We have a long road ahead of us, but I know it'll be worth it." "I know it will."
Jin has been your closest friend for years and someone you held deep feelings for, ones that went further than platonic friendship. It was easy to fall for his looks, but he was much more than just a pretty face. He had the personality to boot. He had a natural sense of humor that flowed with ease, always cracking jokes and making you smile. He was caring and always turned to laughter to cheer you up after a tough day. His caring nature only made you like him more. Your crush had been running for a long time, perhaps too long. It was to a point now where you wanted to say something, but fear was still holding you back.
The cake you made was small, so it was fully baked in no time. The sweet aroma wafted into the air as Jin carefully removed it from the oven. Steam rose from the yellow cake, curling into the air like a tempting finger beckoning you to have a taste. However, it wasn't finished just yet. Once it cooled off, you grabbed the strawberries from the fridge along with the whipped cream to add the final touches. Jin spread the topping along the cake, creating a cohesive pattern with an offset spatula. You went behind him and spooned the sugary strawberries along it, watching the syrupy juice trickle along the cream topping. The sight of it made your mouth water and you couldn't wait to have a test taste. Eating whatever you baked was probably the best part of going to culinary school.
