You sat in dismal silence at the window of your apartment, gazing down at the cars driving along the damp streets. For the past ten minutes you'd been contemplating on if it was worth it to leave the house for some takeout. It was always a risk going out in public. One accidental brush of contact would cause instant harm. You were born with a curse that forced you to keep distance between yourself and anyone who approached your personal bubble. You couldn't touch anyone or they would end up getting hurt, usually seconds after making physical contact with you.

Your entire life you were told, "It's so you can find your soulmate." but that was a bunch of crap. You didn't care if it was to find the person you were fated to be with—you hated it. Used to, you longed for the day you met your soulmate, knowing that when you did, this cursed ability would go away, as would your soulmate's. Now it felt like an unattainable dream.
After going back and forth with yourself for what felt like ages, you decided to brave the outside for some takeout. You hadn't been grocery shopping, leaving your pantry and fridge mostly bare. It was your own fault. Leaving the house meant running the risk of harming someone on accident.

You tugged on your jacket, stepping out into the streets, weaving between pedestrians, thankful for the dreary weather, as if kept a lot of people indoors.

The savory aroma of Chinese food greeted you when you stepped into the local restaurant. The lady up front greeted you with a welcoming smile, allowing you to peruse the menu for a few minutes.
The wait for your meal would be roughly ten to fifteen minutes, so you made yourself comfortable on a worn leather bench beside the stone koi pond, watching the fish swim around inside. One larger koi had your attention for a few minutes, your eyes following it around the shallow pond. Eventually, you resorted to scrolling on your phone, always using it as a crutch when in public places. Anything to keep people from approaching.

The ding of the front door rang and you briefly moved your attention from your screen to the newcomer.

Time slowed and your breath caught. This man was ethereal—devastatingly so. His fluffy blonde hair fluttered in the gust of air from the doors, his gentle brown eyes meeting yours for a split second. He flashed you a small smile that made your chest tight and strode up to the register. You watched him from behind while he ordered his food, his gentle and airy voice blessing your ears. Once his order was placed, he took a seat at the opposite end of the bench, leaving a massive gap between you both. Part of you was relieved on account of your condition. You dared to give a sidelong glance in the handsome stranger's direction, admiring his features for as long as you could without getting caught. His side profile was too gorgeous. His nose was adorably dainty and his lips were unfairly full. He was like a living Bratz doll.
In that moment, you truly believed he was the most gorgeous man you'd ever seen. No one had ever made an impact on you like this. Your hands felt clammy and your heart beat rapidly.

His head turned just a fraction and you forced your attention back to your phone. It was nearly impossible not to take another look, his presence drawing your attention like a magnet. You risked it and stole another glance, freezing when your gaze met his. A pair of large coffee-colored eyes staring directly into yours. Your cheeks burned with embarrassment.
"Miss, your food is ready."
You were grateful for the timing, tearing your attention away from the blonde male and paying for your order, careful not to let your fingers brush the cashier's, evading any and all physical touch. You grabbed your food, thanking the woman and leaving before things got more awkward.
Right as you stepped out of the restaurant, you heard the woman call out, "Sir, your food is ready."

The soft, yet rapid thumps of your shoes against the pavement melded with the sounds of cars and faint chatter from pedestrians. You wanted to get home as quickly as possible, keeping your chances of accidentally injuring someone to a minimum.

"Hey!" A male voice called out from somewhere behind you.
You peeked over your shoulder to find the attractive blonde guy from the Chinese restaurant.
No. No. This can't be happening.
You picked up the pace, attempting to put as much distance between the both of you as possible.
You turned just in time to see him reach out to grab you. You panicked and jerked back.
"Don't!" You warned.
"Why?"
"You'll get h—"
You couldn't react fast enough and his hand wrapped around your wrist.
"No!" You flinched away like you'd been burned by his touch.
Your eyes darted frantically around the area, waiting for someone to mug the poor guy or bump into him and make him fall and break his arm—anything. But for the first time in your entire life, nothing happened.
"What?" You exhaled, brows furrowing.

The man released your wrist with a grin on his face.
"Why are you smiling? You could've gotten hurt!" You fretted, not meaning sound as firm as you did.
"I knew it."
"You knew what?"
"Physical contact causes harm to others. Am I right?" He asked.
"How did you know that?"
"I have the same thing."
His words barely registered in your mind.
"You what?"
"When I saw you in the restaurant, I couldn't take my eyes off you." He paused. "And I noticed the way you avoided the cashier's touch like the plague. I've spent my entire life doing the same thing, so I recognized it."
Your eyes slowly widened in realization.
"I had to see if it was true." He finished. "If you were my soulmate."
"I felt it too." You admitted. "That intense feeling of being pulled in. I didn't want to believe it. It's been so long."
"I know." He nodded, taking a step forward. "I've been waiting my whole life to meet you."

The emotions you felt in that moment were indescribable. A heaviness that had unknowingly been weighing on you was lifted and the empty feeling in your chest that you'd become so accustomed to was now filled.
"I'm Y/n."
He smiled warmly. "Jimin."
"Um." You cleared your throat, trying to process everything that had transpired in a matter of minutes. "I was just heading home. Would you like to eat there with me?"
You were worried your invitation was too forward and way too sudden despite the fact that you were soulmates, but those concerns were eased instantly by Jimin's beaming grin.
"I would love that."
He held his open palm out and you took hold without hesitation.
"Lead the way, Y/n."

On the way back to your place, you caught Jimin stealing glances your way. He looked at you with so much love and adoration, you could almost feel it. Like him, you too were experiencing intense attraction like no other. An inexplicable swell of emotions for a man you just met, and yet, you felt like you'd known him your entire life. This, you thought, was what it felt like to find your soulmate.
And now, with your burdensome "gift" gone and your person beside you, you felt hope for the first time in your life. Hope for a new chapter.
