I slipped out of the door and shut it softly, not wanting to draw attention to myself. As usual, I was going out for my Tuesday midnight walk, and I didn't want my neighbours to think I was some mad insomniac roaming the countryside.

As I walked down the gravel path to the gate, the village clock struck twelve in the square. I followed the twisty path into the forest, where occasional lights from the odd firefly would glimmer from. The wet grass squelched slightly underneath my sneaker and everything was still. It was different, a refreshing change from the sunshiny forest.

I followed the narrow path, enjoying the peaceful silence that was interrupted by the chirping of crickets. The moon peeked out from behind the clouds, bathing the earth in soft moonlight.

As I walked, I caught sight of Still River. It lay like a piece of reflective glass, gleaming and smooth without a ripple to disturb it. But today, there was something distinctly different.

The clearing around the lake was still there, but it wasn't empty. In the middle stood a caravan, its shafts and roof painted a creamy yellow, and it's walls painted a clear ladybird red. There was a beam of light glowing from it's half-curtained windows, and it threw a soft shadow on the ground.

I looked at it carefully, before I padded to observe it. On it's door hung a sign that read 'Seek to know your fortune? Fortunes read here'.

It was printed in black block letters, and I doubted the authenticity of the gypsy inside. I could bet that it was all just a scam. But it wouldn't hurt to try, would it? It would just be a fun thing to do.

I tapped on the door softly, waiting for a reply. "Come in," came a voice.

I pushed the door and looked round the caravan. There was a fold up sofa near the wall, and a bunk lay above it like those in a ship. The stove stood silent, and a sparkling white sink sat near it. A small table sat in the corner, and a figure dressed in red sat at it. The caravan was small and snug, and I almost wished I had one.

"Come, sit down. I don't bite," the gypsy called. I drew up a chair and sat opposite him or her. The gypsy was wearing a hood that shaded most of his or her face, but the voice was soft and almost melodious. The gypsy's nails glowed in the light, and I  knew that she was a female.

"Your palm please, my dear," I stuck out my right hand gingerly, and she took it in her big one.

"Ah, we have ______ here. You live in that little red and white cottage in the village. I hope your cow is still giving you milk? Or does it still have problems with milk production?"

The gypsy left me absolutely speechless. She seemed to know everything about me, and even about my cow. Should I stay or run? This was getting creepy, really. I stared at the hooded face in front of me, not knowing what to make out of it. Had I made the right choice to come here?

As if reading my thoughts, she placed a comforting arm on my shoulder. "Don't worry, I won't kill you. Let me continue."

I nodded. If she was going to kill me, I would just give her a punch in her face. No, better still. I'd give her a kick in her stomach. I drew my arm and leg up, ready to strike any moment. After all, I would rather die at home.
