Sitting in a cramped hole with spiders running over my feet was never where I imagined I would be.

But here I was, my face pressed unglamourously against a molding plank, breathing in the musty air of the cellar. While red liquid dripped down, running messily down my shorts. I cringed slightly, and drew up my legs as best as I could, considering the situation.

Here I was, in the basement of the Thornthwaite Manor.

-

"A long long time ago, when everything was peaceful, the Thornthwaite Manor was inhabited by Lord Thornthwaite and his family. For centuries, the Thornthwaites never had a girl child, and to they wanted to keep it that way. But legend had it that the Lord's wife was with twins, and when one of them was a girl, she grew frightened. In fear of her husband's wrath, she bade her waiting woman keep the child. But the deed did not escape the eyes of the family lawyer, whose wife was greedy for material wealth. Driven mad by the constant threats of his wife, the lawyer finally threatened to uncover the secret. The unhappy Lady Thornthwaite begged and implored him to spare her, but nothing would appease him-save ten thousand pounds, and the promise of half the sprawling estate.

When he realised  that Lady Thornthwaite would never give up her life, he plotted her end with a ruthlessness no general could match. One stormy night, when Lady Thornthwaite was alone, sherry glass in hand, the telephone rang.

Moments later, she was found dead, telephone cradle in hand. Further police investigations revealed that her sherry had been poisoned, and the cook was promptly sent to jail.

But no one knew that she had died of a wrong number. Except for the lawyer. When she had picked up the phone, lightning had struck the telephone pole-and her insides were fried, literally.

And when the young Thornthwaites grew up, they went the same way their mother did, this time, with the family metallic chess set.

The Thornthwaite Manor was filled with years of suicide and murder. But till this day, rumors have it that the Thornthwaites haunt the grand manor, waiting to avenge their unhappy deaths."

"Go on in, I dare you!"

I glanced at the run down residence in front of me, and gulped. The Thornthwaite Manor had been named as the Devil's Lair, and no one who went in was ever seen again.

"Do you want to join our gang or not? We don't like chickens, Lama. You know that."

I cringed slightly. "I-I'll go in. But only if you all wait out here for me."

"Of course."

I took in a deep breath and stepped through the rusted gate, doing my best to avoid the cobwebs draped spookily over the stakes of the gate.

The stood the door, worn and scratched, but the family crest was carved only. The grand T that loomed upon the entrance seemed to have seen its fair share of gore and horror. I contemplated running back, but I couldn't. I would make it and join the cool kids.

I pushed open the door and immediately, darkness swallowed me. I turned on my flashlights, and stalked down the hallway, buried underneath carpets of dust. Swallowing, I steeled myself, bring my legs to walk.

Each step I made resonated through the house, until I realised something awry. There were two sets of footsteps, my loud ones, an another set of soft ones. I paused, and glanced around, the fear choking me. I breathed testily, waiting for what was to come.
