Gilbert is one of the teachers that came with the German contingent currently exiled in Hogwarts. Unlike others who have adapted quickly to Hogwarts as to successfully apply to teach a class there (Adele Lagrange and Advanced Arithmancy comes to mind), he's one of the teachers who are still there on a more supportive basis than anything. This is because the classes that he taught and his expertise does not easily line up with something already in the Hogwarts curriculum. For example, one of his signature classes is Opferrituale und Blutmagie.
With a head full of curls and his penchant for bow ties, the impression he gives is 'mostly harmless' (Honoria Gildenstern's opinion), and his youthful face does not help with that. His primary interest is mostly in rituals and older forms of magic. 'Gilbert' is a name that is derived from Old German elements gisal "pledge, hostage" and beraht "bright.
First Appearance: Chapter 70 ("Solstice and Rituals") among the rest of the Hogwarts teachers, conversing with Honoria, the Ancient Runes professor.
