I was laying in the hammick I made as a bed, watching the soft glow of from the fire flickering on the wall. It wasn't like I didn't already know I wasn't just Elve. I knew I was a combination of species, but my thought was only two, not three. Why am I so surprised?
I wonder who my Dad is and what my Dad is. IS he still alive? Maybe I can go find him next month if m Pappy knows what section of the Realms he is in. Maybe he is in Devour! I wouldn't mind finding him, if he lived here. I know of nowhere else, and frankly, it scares me just thinking about going on an adventure to the outside lands. I've never been out of Devour, not even to the Realm of the humans.
Ever since I was little, I was told that Devour is the worst Realm. The most violent, scary and dangerous one. So if no one here scares me, why am I so scared to enter the less fearful Realms? I sighed and rolled out of bed, looking through the window at the stars. Trying to determin what time it is. I grab my bow and arrow and jump out of the window.
I land with a soft thud, just outside and I sprint to the outskirts of the woods. Looking back at my home, I see I didn't wake anyone or anything up. The owl was the only thing up and watching me. I turned around and ran through the forest, heading towards the river. That was my thinking spot. The spot that always held me up, healed me. The River of the Lost, it was the most special river in the Realm.
I sat down on the Bank, dangling my feet over the little cliff that was only 2 feet taller than the river. M feet skimmed the top but I knew not to let them go in. Legend is, when you die and you aren't reincarnated, your soul goes here. The souls will pull you in and try to take over the body, as if it was a Vessel that could be replaced. I chuckled at the thought that those are what humans would call Zombies. I find human superstitions to be hilarious, and ridiculous. In all honesty, what makes them think that we are all bad and evil? Or that we work with Santa Clause?
I heard a crunch of a leaf from behind me. I spun around, getting up on one knee with a bow and arrow in hand, aiming it at the person infront of me. "Who are you?" I demanded.
"Wow, eady. Put the arrow down, Vanish." I heard a familiar male voice say. I put my arrow back in its Holster and sat down the way I was before.
"Why are you here, Phoenix?" I asked him. He had one of the cool talents, turning into a bird thats caught on fire.
"This is where I like to come and think. You know that." He said sitting next to me. I looked over at his golden tanned skin, High cheek bones, chocolate brown eyes with the green streaks, dark green hair, perfect mouth and teeth. His broad chest, his strong muscles and his strong hands wrapped around a spear. "I am the one who brought you here before."
"Why are you really here? I know you don't come here often, I come everyday and its been almost a year since you have been here." I spat out.
"Misty is looking for you."
"So she sent you to come retreave me? Look, bird-boy, I have no interest in communicating with you or her." I said standing up and brushing the dirt off my hands.
He grabbed the hand that wasn't holding the arrows and bows. I just glared at his hand, imagining myself cutting his hand off. "It is important. She has new leads and new news. Good news."
I jerked my hand out of his grip. "Fine. Keep your claws to yourelf." I said before jogging to the secret house built deep in the forest. I know I could vanish there but I would prefer to procrasinate a bit. I don't want to communicate with Misty, not one bit. However, I know I have to. If Pheonix, of all people, say it is important, than there is something going on that we should worry about.
I reached the house and tapped on the door 3 times before turning to the huge rock next to it. Looking around and gathering my surroundings, I made sure no one was there. I walked behind the rock and slid into the tiny hole next to it, crawling down the tunnel into the house bulit underneath the tree, embedded into the Roots. Misty was sitting there in her white, flowing dress. Her jet black hair pulled to the side of her body. She glanced at me and looked relieved that I showed. "Vanish."
"Yes, ma'am." I bowed with my forearm over my heart. "Always nice to see you, Misty."
"You are always so proper and polite. I wish you would just speak your mind for once." She sighed. "I really didn't mean to take Pheonix from you. It just happened. I wish we could go back to being friends."
"With all respect, I am over it and I have forgiven you both," not really, "so please, lets get to the news."
"The prophecies say that the Liosalfar Elves will have to Surrender to the Svartalfar Elves. I have found out, by a little birdy," known as Pheonix most likely, "that they are marching to us as we speak. The good news, is that I don't think that they are here for the war. We still have a few years of preparation. However, we need to be on Guard. You are the best with the bow and arrow. I would prefer if you were to stay in the trees and follow them through the forest once they enter our part of the Realm."
I froze. That was a suicide mission, having me, a Light Elve follow a Svartalfar, a Dark Elve. "You are asking me to follow the Dark Elves, and go to my death if they catch me? Misty, look, I don't think I can do that. I don't exactly blend in with the trees or plants or the ground. My hair and eyes actually say 'oh look, here I am!'" I said a bit panicked.
"You have the ability to Vanish. You are the best one for this job! I can't raise alarm with anyone else. We are here to protect our side of the Realm. We must do this. The King and Queen requested you, Vanish. Trust me, if I had a say in this, you wouldn't be going." Misty told me, standing up.
"Why is that?"
"I don't think you are ready for something this big."
"What makes you think that?" I asked, crossing my arms infront of my chest.
"You are only 16, you have barely lived. You have never met a Dark Elve and they aren't pretty to see. They aren't as civil as we are." She said slowly, as if she was trying to cover her slip up.
"You are only 23. You have barely lived as well. I am also turning 17 in a month. So, I will do this if they want me to. However, I do this alone. No one watches me." I bowed again and turned around. I got into the tunnel again when I heard Misty mutter under her breath something I couldn't comprehend. I sighed and climbed my way up, vanishing to my bedroom half way through.
"Vanish." I jumped at my Pappy's voice. I turned around and looked her dead in the eyes. "Where were you?"
"The River of the Lost." That wasn't an entire lie.
"After that?"
"No where else, Pappy." I muttered.
"Why do you look like you were crawling through dirt?"
"I got curious and bored. They didn't mix well."
"Vanish, what is your mission?" She sighed.
"My mission? I don't know what you are talking about." I said climbing into bed. She couldn't possibly know unless she was in it herself and I have not seen her so she can't know.
"What is the King and Queen asking you to do?" She asked, her voice demanding.
"Well, uhm, the Svartalfer are coming soon. So I have to stay in the trees as look out." I finally gave in.
"We must fix you the best weapons then. Follow me." She said. Quietly, we snuck out of the front door to the root sticking out of the ground. I never knew we used it for anything. Pappy punched the root repeatedly til she punched a hole inside. She started peeling away the layers of bark until finally, she reached in and grabbed a big thing of arrows. There had to be atlest a hundred in it. I couldn't look inside the root, she wouldn't let me. Next, she grabbed a big bow. From the ground, it went up to my shoulders. The bow fanned out at the ends, looking like vines were interlaced. It was beautiful and it was the same dark brown as the trees and the same color green. She handed them both to me and said to practice.
I took one of the arrows out and drew it back. I took aim at the Owl that's been outside this entire time. I inhaled, and then let go as I exhaled. The arrow when all the way through the owl and kept going to the next tree. "Holy moly!" I said, loving the power this bow had.
"Good aim, Vanish. Now practice blending into the tree." She asked. I backed up to our house and blended myself and the Bow and Arrows. She nodded in approval and I couldn't help the tears I got. "Now, you mustn't tell Poppy. This was meant for Passion." I nodded, not trusting my voice. This was the most love she has ever shown me.
