"How long have we been here?" I asked Fenrir, annoyed that my voice sounded so whiny.
"A few hours at most." He growled between his teeth. It felt more like a few days, but by the state of grogginess or the lack of, I knew it couldn't be as long as it seemed to me. The Cave messes with time, it seems like so I can't be that sure how long it was. I'm just hoping to compare my inner time clock and Fenrir's to get an estimation.
"It feels longer," I sighed as Maddy tugged my ear to go through the passage way that just opened. "Do you think we can find our way out?"
"Child, I have already found the way out. When you guys didn't follow, I came looking for you." Fenrir grumbled at me in frustration. "Now look what we put ourselves into. A never ending maze, but I guarantee I can find our way out. Again."
"Once we find Drake, we can." I agreed. I was looking forward to looking at the sun again. To smell the trees, the leaves, the flowers and every scent that came to us in the open breeze. It was a craving I was needing and I would have it at some point.
"Why are we looking for him? He may be dead--"
"I won't believe that," I shook my head, interrupting him. I looked through the passageway to the left and froze. "Pappy?"
"Pappy?" Fenrir asked, giving me a questioning look.
"Vanish," her hand extended to me and I took an involuntary step forward. "Come here, come help us."
"Pappy, wait!" I yelled when she turned around and started running away. I took off after her, hoping to catch her before I lost sight of here. I didn't want to lose her in these always-changing tunnels.
"Vanish!" Barely two steps were taken when Fenrir took hold of my bag and kept me in place. "Pappy isn't there. The cave is messing with your mind."
"Of coarse she isn't there! She took off running so you can't see her anymore. I have to grab her before she is lost!" I swat at his muzzle but he didn't let go.
"Pappy was never there, Vanish. Little girl, listen to me!" He let go of the bag and I sprawled out on the floor. That was real nice of him.
"Yes, she was. I saw her with my own 2 eyes!" I got up and saw the passage was closed. "Great job Fenrir, she is lost to me now. How can we save her when she is lost here?" I threw my hands up in frustration.
"The Cave is trying to split us up. That was the Cave playing tricks on you. There was no one there. Now, lets go." He helped pick me up with his giant head. Maddy jumped onto his neck and Fenrir's chest started to roar.
"Go, Go!" Maddy pulled on his ears like reigns but Fenrir didn't understand what Maddy was telling him to do, considering he only heard chattering. We walked down the main tunnel and let Maddy lead us for a few hours. He would make us stop here and there, chatter, wait, we would hear chatter back and then go off in that direction. The problem was, was that every time they were around the corner, the passage would change.
Chattering echoed around us, louder than before. "Are we here?" I asked Maddy.
"Yes, yes! Family Reunion! Here we are! Here at last! Dinner time!" He bounced on Fenrir's neck, getting him a growl.
"Dinner time? You didn't bring us here to be eaten, did you?" I asked, eyeing him carefully.
"Never!" He jumped at me, my arms opening at instinct and accepting him. "Forever, me and you."
Forever? It feels like it already. I am planning on leaving this cave, though, so forever has to be shortened a tad.
"Then what do you mean by 'dinner'?" I asked, tugging on one of his ears, earning a giggle-fest of happiness from him.
