Chapter 53

As we neared the village on the second day I sighed. "What?" Kankuro asked me. I looked at him then out at the sand. "Nothing I'm just worried about Neji. He seemed not himself when I left and I'm scared he is going to go do something stupid and get himself killed." I said honestly because I wanted to get it off my chest.

"Well what do you expect? He has liked you since you've known him. Then suddenly you go and get engaged. Of course he is going to be a little off. He is hurt not stupid." Kankuro said and I stopped then looked at him.

"Kankuro he isn't just hurt. You didn't see the look in his eyes. That's the eyes of a man about to do something stupid. I've seen it more times than I can count. I shattered him. Whatever attachment he had to me was one of the only things he had. The look he had said it all even when he tried to hold it in then to make things worse I hit him. Right across the face I hit him." I said and he sighed then looked me straight in the eye.

"If you feel this bad are you sure you should have said yes?" He asked me making my eyes snap up to his. "I'm sure I should've said yes. I have no regret or doubt about it. I just am scared that I hurt him and our friendship." I said as he softly took my hands in his.

"It will work out I promise. He will come around they always do. Besides I do not think anyone can stay mad at you for too long." I smiled a little then he hugged me softly. "Alright let's get home. I have a feeling the swarm of girls back at the Leaf is nothing compared to Tamari." He said and I nodded with a smile.

When we entered the village I felt the warmth of home surround me. "When we get home I'm taking a bath then going to sleep. It's pretty late so I think we should just grab something on the way to the house. The other two have probably eaten by now. What do you think?" I asked looking back at him.

"Yeah whatever you want. I'm just ready to get home." He said and I huffed at him. We stopped and ate the walked to Gaara's office. I knocked and he said to enter so we did.

"Oh you're back." Gaara said simply leaning back in his chair. "How did it go?" He asked and I glared at him. "If you ever do that to me again I will dye your hair pink." I said to him. "I take it not that well?" He asked.

"It was fine if you leave out the agonizing pain. A broken shoulder, broken collar bone, cracked ribs, beat up teammates, and almost getting....never mind. Point being I wanted to scream the whole time." I said to him and he sighed then ran a hand through his hair then looked at his brother.

"How was she?" He asked like I wasn't even there. "Her performance was on point as I said it would be. She pulled through and was very acute to everything. As I told you a natural born leader. Although I would say she needs to depend on her team more.

There were times where she was hard to even understand because her thinking was different but that is exactly what got us through. Her plans worked mostly but when they didn't she immediately changed it. She also read the prisoners like a book. She passed with flying colors. I believe you'll be getting a letter from the Hokage saying the same thing." Kankuro told Gaara and I sighed then sat down on the couch he had in his office.

"So was this like a test or something?" I asked them taking my hair down and running my hands through it. "Pretty much. I needed to know how well you could think with people depending on you and how quickly you can adapt to different situations. So I had Kankuro and Neji watch you closely." I looked at him then sighed.

"Okay. Whatever I'm tired and dirty can I go home now?" I asked him and he nodded as I walked over to his desk and around it. I bent down and looked him straight in the eye.

"You missed me didn't you?" I asked him and he actually rolled his eyes at me. "Come on you know you did. Just admit it." I said poking his cheek. He sighed then looked at my hand his eyes snapped to Kankuro and Kankuro smiled sheepishly.
