-Annie's POV-
I wake up to my phone alarm blaring and vibrating in my hand.
I rub my eyes and follow my morning routine of nothingness.
"Hey sweetie, how are you feeling?" I hear my mom's soft voice as I reach the bottom of the stairs.
So she's just going to pretend none of that happened I see.
"Oh, me? Terrible. My brother's still dead if you haven't noticed. Anyway, I'm surprised you're feeling okay. Your throat, I mean, after screaming at me last night." She sighs and gives my dad a flustered look.
"I'm sorry, Annie. I was just a little agitated yesterday and it set me off when you used language which you know is not approved of in this house. However, I do understand that it was in poor taste of me to replace Caleb's photo even for a little while, and for me to yell at you like that."
"Great. Well Hayley and I have to go." I say flatly.
"I love you" My parents respond.
"Love you." My sister and I say before walking out the door.
It's quiet for a moment before she speaks up.
"I'm sorry too, ya know"
"It's fine. I wouldn't have been mad at you if you hadn't said anything, 'cause you're not the one who put the picture up."
"I know, but I still feel guilty for replacing him. I cried about it for like an hour. I spent like another half hour praying for forgiveness." She looks down.
"Watch where you're going or you're gonna get hit by a car or something. I really don't think I'll be able to deal with two dead siblings. And don't count on that God dude being real. If he was real I don't think he wouldn't have killed our brother."
"You might be right, but I'm still gonna try my best to believe. I don't just pray for myself. I pray for you and Caleb and mom and dad." I try to ignore the fact that she just said that she prays for me. That makes me uncomfortable.
"What is there to pray for Caleb about? He's past any sort of saving."
"I just like to make sure that he's having a good time in heaven, probably having fun with David." I sometimes think about that too, to be honest. If the afterlife is real, at least they have each other.
We step on the bus and enter our little separate worlds.
....
"See ya later" I say as Katie turns toward her next class.
"Bye"
Into history I go. I haven't seen Hayden in the halls yet today, so maybe he's not here.
I sit down and copy down the warm-up into my binder and see Jayden smile at me. I don't smile back, because I'm me, obviously, but I nod.
....
"Friday!!!" Katie says as we stand up and leave Spanish class.
"Yeah" I say unenthusiastically.
"Did you ask your mom if I could come over?"
"I forgot. I'll text her on the bus and let you know. I think she's guilty about last night, so I'm just going to assume you can come anyway."
"Okay. Text me" She heads toward her bus and I head toward mine.
"Hey" I feel a tap on my shoulder and I see Jayden walking next to me. What the hell does this girl want from me?
"Uh, hi?" I say. She just smiles again and walks away. Well at least I don't have to socialize anymore.
Me- Katie can stay over tonight right?
Mom- sure! do you need me to pick up any snacks?
Me- just some chips or something. Sour patch kids, popcorn..
Mom- Sounds good💗I'll be home soon incase you guys get there first
I change into my chat with Katie.
Me- she said you can come
Katie💗- cool. I'll leave home around 4
After that, I open safari and click the tab that takes me to Attaway Chat.
Me- you shouldn't talk to me in public
Jayden- why
Me- because you're you
Me- if people see us talking they'll probably start judging you
Jayden- OR they'll start accepting YOU
Me- impossible. Literally impossible. Plus you're probably going to realize in like two days that you don't want to talk to me anyway
Jayden- you said it yourself that me and my friends are nice
Me- no one's THAT nice
Jayden- if I'm still talking to you in two days then will you agree to sit with me at lunch on Monday
Me- honestly sure. deal. I know it won't happen so I have nothing to lose
Jayden- deal
