the night draws in coldly, another night to think about the things you've done.

the door to your bedroom gets knocked on three times, waiting for a response from you.

you yell out to whoever that was, to come in, and close the door behind them.

you hear nothing for a few seconds until the door opens, the wooden floor creaking under their feet. you snuggle deeper into the covers, covering your wet face from their view, too scared to show them how much of a scaredy cat you are. you're supposed to be brave. you're supposed to be the one who wears the pants in the relationship.

but now you have to explain why you broke down just a few minutes ago. why you yelled at them at how much you felt so betrayed, why you got so mad at the fact that for the past few weeks, they arrive past midnight, especially just awhile ago—or let's say last night since it's already two in the morning—when they promised that you guys would go on a date since it's your fourth year anniversary as girlfriends.

"jisoo..." you hear her call out your name, inching closing to your body. the duvets pressed onto your skin gets lifted up, her fingertips pulling them away.

"i just wanted–"

"what else do you want, jennie?" you snap at her. her face goes into shock, not used to your sudden outbursts.

"i just wanted to say goodnight." her palm goes to pat your head, scurrying the leftover blanket covering your face. she cups your cheek in her hand, her eyes finding their way to yours.

if this were a regular day, or if it were four years ago when you only had a small crush on your best friend, your heart should already be fluttering by now. it's beating out of your chest and you pray to whoever's up there that she wouldn't be able to hear the loud thumping.

for some reason, why was nothing happening?

you slowly sit up from your position on the bed. she anticipates what you're about to do, yet, she doesn't necessarily expect something extravagant to happen.

"goodnight?" you state, it being said as a question more than a statement.

she nods at you. holding your hand not too tight.

you feel your chest tighten. you feared that this day would come. why was it happening? you have no idea, either. maybe it was just destined to happen.

"jennie?" you call her name just like she had called you before. she tilts her head up to look at you, dearly. the ache in your chest still dominant.

"tell me why the moment you said goodnight, it felt like goodbye?"

Can I ask you something?
Anything.
Why is it everytime we say goodnight, it feels like goodbye?
