It's the question almost everyone's afraid to ask. It's that life or death question to know whether or not what you're getting from the other person is the real thing. Were you actually together? Or were you just two strangers, friends, who just happen to flirt with each other? Nothing more, nothing less.
In this case, it's the question that never left Rosie's mind. Lisa and her had always had this "thing" going on between them ever since they graduated high school. It was confusing to her because they never really settled on a label to what they really were. Do friends kiss? Do friends invite each other to their dorms just to make out?
"Rosie," Lisa's voice falters in the older girl's brain. "you're zoning out again."
With that, Rosé shakes her head, snapping out of whatever trance she was in. "I'm sorry," she says with a small smile which Lisa reciprocates almost immediately, "I just have... a lot of things in my mind."
"Oh?" Lisa asks, her tone curious. She closes her textbook and lays her head on her hands as her elbows were propped on the table. They were studying for the upcoming exam week. It was their second year in their respective colleges, with Lisa majoring in Biology and Rosie in Performing Arts. Their colleges were miles awat from each other, yet they still find time to meet once or twice a week.
"What are they?"
"Huh?" Rosie raises an eyebrow, completely forgetting what she just said.
"You said you had alot of things in your mind," Lisa repeats what the older girl stated, "what are they?"
"It's nothing, Lis."
"But-"
"I said it's nothing, Lisa."
The maknae pouts at the answer. Forcing Rosie to say something she doesn't want to talk about never works, so she decides not to push it any further.
Seeing Lisa's face turn into a frown made the blonde girl regret what she had said. She sighs, closing her own textbook, reaching out to hold Lisa's hand, clenching it tightly.
"I'm sorry," she whispers looking up at the girl's eyes. "I'm just stressed, is all."
Lisa shakes her head, smiling softly at Rosie, "You know you can tell me, right?"
"You can tell me anything and I'll listen."
Rosie nods, "I know."
It had gone silent after those words. Rosie really wanted to ask it, to ask what they were. What was really going on between them. But was it the right time? Was it the right place? Right situation?
Lisa's eyes became softer as time went by. She observed the blonde's actions very closely. How the girl started fiddling with her fingers as she got back to reading her textbook. How her eyes basically scanned the page when she usually takes time analyzing every single word printed. How her leg started bouncing up and down causing the table to shake just a little.
That's where Lisa knew something was up.
"Rosie," she calls for her name, "please tell me what's wrong."
Rosie stops reading the textbook once again. And as she looks up, a tear rolls down her face making Lisa panic, thinking she had said the wrong thing.
The younger girl reaches out to wipe the tear away but the blonde pulls away.
"Lisa," she stutters, her eyes looking down at the ground too afraid to see what the girl's reaction would be.
"What are we?"
And just like she had expected, Lisa had nothing to say. Silence grew still yet the loudness grew stronger inside rosie's mind.
"Rosie, I–"
"I just need an answer." she cuts her off, wiping away more of the tears that started running down her face.
"We're..." Lisa looked down, pressing her fingers against each other as she responds, "friends."
Rosie lets out a sigh. Was it a sigh of disappointment or a sigh of relief? She had no idea either.
"Oh," was the only thing that came out of her mouth.
"But I like you, Chaeng." Lisa comes at her, stuttering and shaking. Their eyes meet one another as Lisa tries desperately to save the situation.
"I just... I don't know how this works. We're friends, right?"
"Yes Lisa, we are." Rosie says nonchalantly, rolling her eyes. She starts gathering her things, quickly putting them in her bag.
And as Rosie stands up, Lisa holds onto the girl's wrist.
"You like me back, right?"
Rosie lets out an exasperated sigh, "Why would you ask that?"
"You do, right?" the younger girl's tone gone as if she was pleading.
"Of course I do, Lisa. If I didn't, we would've been done before college even started."
Lisa nods at the answer, her eyes looking at Rosie's, indicating that they should go back to sitting down.
As Rosie sat back down, placing her things by her feet, she looks back up to meet Lisa's gaze. She didn't know how to describe what she saw. The girl's eyes were glittered with hope, yet still indulged with fear.
"I'm sorry," they say at the same time.
The two of them release a series of laughs before going back into the familiar silence they were sitting in.
"I just thought..." Lisa starts it off, "I thought we were good like that, you know? Without us having some sort of label."
"Then what do you tell people when they ask who I am to you?"
Lisa doesn't even hesitate when she answered, "You're my girlfriend."
"I-" Rosie stutters, not being able to contain the butterflies suddenly present in her stomach. "I am?"
"Why? What do you tell people when they ask you about me?"
"I just tell them you mean a lot to me," Rosie states, a small smile on her face, "I didn't want to say you're my girlfriend 'cause I really didn't know what we were."
Lisa shifts her chair to go beside the girl. She grabs hold of Rosie's hand off the table and she gives it a quick kiss.
"Well then, Roseanne Park..." she gives her a cheeky grin, "Will you officially be my girlfriend?"
Rosie feels her cheeks heat up at the question as she then hides her face into the crook of Lisa's neck, giving it small kisses here and there.
"Is that a yes?"
"Mhmm," Rosie pulls away just to look at Lisa's eyes, down to her plump, strawberry-flavored lips. She captures them in hers as they indulge themselves into a slow, passionate makeout session.
"Rosie," Lisa pulls away, gasping for air. "We need to study."
"What are you studying?" the girl asks her.
"Anatomy."
"Well," Rosie gives her a smirk beforing pushing Lisa off the chair and onto the carpeted floor below them. "Just study my body instead."
