Erin

"She still isn't answering her phone." I say to Sarah with a sigh, before putting my phone down on the table and sipping on my milkshake.

We went out to some retro themed diner for milkshakes. Sarah told me Joel was talking to the guys tonight, you know, about Soel. That's the ship name I'm going with. He called Sarah to let her know that Patrick took the news well, as expected, Jay freaked out a little, as expected, and Jamie stormed out. Not expected at all. I thought I'd be having a difficult conversation with Jay tonight. I did not expect to be calling my best girlfriend over and over to see how she's doing. I've sent her a bunch of texts too, and nothing.

"It's gotta be about Noah." Sarah comments. "I can't think why else she would have taken it so bad."

I nod my agreement. There's no other explanation. Sarah and Noah are friends. Jamie and Noah are...well, nothing now. But she has feelings for him, so knowing that one of his oldest friends is now dating one of her oldest friends has gotta be weird.

"She'll come around." I assure Sarah with a smile. "She's always like this. She reacts, she takes some time, then she comes around."

"Sounds like someone else I know." Sarah grins at me. Yeah, Jamie and I are cut from the same cloth for sure.

"Should I reach out to him? You know, the other Jamie?" I ask her.

"That's your decision, Er."

I know it is. But after our talk in Central Park last week, I just don't know if I should.

"No." I say decidedly. "If he wants to talk about this, he'll get in touch with me."

And much to my surprise, my phone starts vibrating on the table, and I have an incoming call from Jay. Sarah laughs when she sees the caller ID. I roll my eyes at her and get up from the booth. I don't wanna do this in front of her. I step outside and answer the call.

"Jay-"

"Er, don't freak out." Holy shit. He does not sound okay. Clearly he hasn't taken this as well as Joel thinks he has. "Jamie's in the hospital."

WHAT?

"Tell me everything."

"She was in a car accident. They're prepping her for surgery right now. We're all here, but we can't do anything. I've tried calling Mike, but he's on a long haul flight. I called my dad, he's sent some hot shot private surgeon over here, so that's something. She's in the best fucking hands possible. But... I don't know what else to do."

I can't believe this. I look around at the New York City traffic around me, the realisation that I am hundreds of miles away from her crashing down on top of me, suffocating me. I need to get to North Bridge. I need to go home.

"Does your dad still have the helicopter?"

"Already on it's way."

"I fucking love you, Jamie. Text me the details, I'll be there soon."

"I love you too."

I rush back into the diner. Sarah's phone is in her hand, and she's white as a ghost.

"Joel just called..."

She already knows.

"Jay's chartered a flight. Come on, we're going to North Bridge."

***

I'm in total fucking auto pilot mode. I left the diner with Sarah and we went back to the dorms, grabbed some shit, then headed out to the designated helipad, as instructed by Jay. I hate it when he throws money at his problems, but I don't give a shit about that tonight. My best friend needs me. In situations like this, I am so fucking glad Jay's a spoiled little rich boy deep down.
