Noah

~ December 27th ~

Jamie, 16:33pm: Cool, enjoy the party. Send videos of Joel if he ends up wasted. I'm not doing much tonight, just hanging with my dad. He's going back overseas tomorrow, so this is my last night with him. Oh, Erin and Jay are officially a couple now, by the way. They got together on Christmas Day, it was totally sweet.

I sigh and rub my temple before locking my phone and putting it away. I'll text Jamie later. Tomorrow. Or maybe the next day. Whatever, whenever.

"Who are you so busy texting over there?" I snap my attention over to my mom. No. Not now.

"Oh, hasn't he told you?" Kim says with a big smile. No. No, no, no!

"Told me what?!" Mom's eyes light up. And this is bad. So bad.

I glare at Zach, because if it weren't for him and his annoying new girlfriend being here right now, this would be a perfectly avoidable situation. I know Zach won't say anything to my mom about Jamie, but that doesn't mean Kim won't. Why are they even here!?

"Nothing!" I snap, at the exact same time Kim says "About his girl."

The damage is done. My mom looks ecstatic. Kim looks smug. Zach looks scared, because he knows I'm gonna punch him for this later. Okay. What do I do? What do I say?

"Are you serious?" Mom breathes, looking at me in disbelief. Ecstatic disbelief. Kill me. Kill me now.

"I'm gonna go get more coffee..." Zach says awkwardly. I shoot him a warning glare. He's staying where he is. Someone needs to try and control Kim's big mouth. God knows I can't.

"What's the matter with you two?" Kim says, looking between me and Zach in confusion.

"Nothing." I mutter, shifting awkwardly in my seat. We're sitting in my mom's favourite coffee house. She wanted to catch up with Zach, before we go to the party tonight. I didn't realise catching up with Zach would include Kim. This is a nightmare. Sarah and Joel are gonna be here soon, which will only make it worse. My mom needs to be gone before fucking Joel gets here, for sure. Kim is bad enough.

"Noah, is there a girl?" Mom asks in delight. I can feel my throat closing up.

"Yes, Janine. There is." Kim says with finality. "I'm surprised he hasn't mentioned her, after what happened at the Snow Ball."

"What happened at the Snow Ball?!" Mom exclaims, practically giddy. My throat is officially closed. I can't breathe.

"Noah ran all the way down to the beach in the middle of the dance to tell her he likes her." Kim says, like it's the most casual thing in the world.

Okay, this isn't that bad. My mom knows I like running. It's no big deal. She has no idea how far the beach in North Bridge is from the NBU campus. This is fine. Totally fine.

"He ran a twenty minute drive, Janine." Kim says with a smile.

This is it. The end. I can't breathe, officially.

"Dude, relax." Zach nudges me from where he's sitting next to me on the sofa. He should be careful. I'm gonna do more than just nudge him later. I glare at him again and he scoots away from me a little. Yeah.

"So, tell me about her!" My mom squeals from where she's sitting next to Kim. Why are those two sitting together, anyway? Who let that happen? "What's her name? What does she look like? Do you have a picture?"

My mom is directing these questions at me, but I'm completely ignoring her. I think I've lost my voice. So she gives up on me and turns her attention back to Kim.
