Erin
~ Christmas Eve ~
"Wait, when did they leave?" I ask stupidly, gawking around Jamie's garage like her and Patrick might be hiding in the mini fridge or something.
"Um, I honestly didn't notice..." Jay replies awkwardly, looking around too.
We're sitting in Jamie's garage, some Harry Potter movie is playing on the TV, our parents are upstairs having Christmas Eve drinks, and Jamie and Patrick were sitting on the other couch watching the movie. Jay and I were engaged in a really good talk just now. But not even noticing that our friends left the room? Wow. That is... Well, it's just us.
"I'm glad you've decided to play nice with me tonight." Jay says, and I look around at him again. He's smiling at me. I love his smile. And I love it when we're like this. Playing nice. It's such a nice change from how we usually are.
"Well, it is Christmas after all." I say casually. "If you can't say it at Christmas, when can you, eh?"
His eyebrows pull together and he studies me with interest. Shit. I shouldn't have said that just now. He knows it's a quote from Love Actually, and he knows that in the movie it's referring to telling someone you love them. Fuck. Damn you, Jamie. She said that in the car ride over here from the train station. If she hadn't, it wouldn't be in my head right now. Whatever, breeze past it.
"True." He says, before flicking his lip ring with his tounge. He looks lost in thought. And he knows I love it when he toys with his lip ring like that. He knows it turns me on... Wait a minute.
"Jamie, put your tounge back into your mouth." I say sternly, and he frowns at me again, confused. He doesn't even realise when he does that. "We're being friendly because it's Christmas and we're gonna be spending a lot of time together. We need some ground rules."
"Ground rules?" He asks, amused.
"Yes." I say decidedly. "Okay, so the first rule of Friend Club is -"
"We can't talk about Friend Club?"
I laugh at this before shoving him playfully. "Shut up. No, seriously. You can't play with your lip ring around me, so stop it."
"Are you serious?" He asks in disbelief. "I don't even realise I'm doing that half the time."
"Well, make a conscious effort to stop it. It drives me crazy, you know it does."
"Patrick does it all the time too!?"
"Yeah, but Patrick isn't you."
He smiles before looking down. Fuck. I shouldn't have said that. I am not doing well with this. Okay. Move it along, Er. Come on, you can do this.
"Whatever. Second rule of Friend Club: we have to keep being nice to each other. The whole way through the holidays. For Jamie and Patrick's sake. I know they've been dreading spending time with us."
"Agreed." He says seriously. "But going back to Rule One, if I can't play with my lip ring, you can't twirl your hair around like that."
He gestures at me, and I look down to see that I am subconsciously twirling a strand of hair around the fingers in my right hand. I do this all the time without thinking. Just like how he tounges his lip ring all the time. Shit, I can't argue about this.
"Okay, fine." I snap, pulling my fingers out of my hair. He laughs at me.
"Anything else?" He asks with a grin.
"That right there!" I come back immediately. "Don't look at me like that."
"What, I'm not allowed to fucking smile at you?" He asks with a laugh.
