Noah
Ten minutes earlier
Zoe is talking to me, but I'm not really listening to a word she's saying. Zara will come along soon and steal her away from me. Good. Because I can't stop looking over at the stage. At Jamie. She looks as pretty as I've ever seen her, and I find myself smiling at her navy cons, just visible below the hem of her dress from how she's sitting with her knee propped up, her guitar resting on her knee. She's never looked more beautiful, and any doubts I may have had about what I'm gonna do tonight are completely gone. I'm seeing this thing through, no matter what.
"Noah, are you listening to me?!" Zoe demands, and I snap my attention back down to her. The Middle have just finished playing Amazed by Lonestar.
"Yeah, course." I reply with a grin. I wasn't really listening, but she doesn't seem to mind. "You look really pretty tonight by the way, but I prefer your usual look."
"You do?" She looks down at her pink dress and considers it. "I do too. Thought I'd try the conventional thing for a change."
"You even dyed your hair blonde." I point out. "I prefer it when you look like a paint palette. You look..."
"Like Maddie?" She asks with a smile, and we both laugh. She does. Her clothes, hair and make-up are all on par with how Madison usually looks. Zoe's hair is short, but besides that, she looks the double of her best friend. It's eerie. I notice some random guy checking her out from behind, and I suppress a laugh.
"Don't look, but the guy standing behind you is totally checking you out right now." I tell her, and her eyes widen in shock.
"Seriously? Man, is he barking up the wrong tree!?" She giggles.
"Where's Zara? You need a buffer."
"Shit, I'm not sure. She was looking for Shaun."
"Well..." I say, before wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her into me a little, "I'll help throw this guy off in her absence."
"Dude, this is weird." She laughs as I flatten my palm against the small of her back. It is fucking weird, but we're friends, it's fine.
"This is what you get for going out looking like Madison." I raise my eyebrows at her.
"Duly noted. But it's fine. After tonight, I'm dying my entire head electric blue." Zoe assures me.
"Good, just do you." I say, before removing my hand from her back. It was enough to get that guy to move along.
I continue talking to Zoe while The Middle finish up playing their last song. This is it. They're gonna break for fifteen minutes now, and this is what I've been waiting for. This is my window. I need to talk to Jamie.
"I gotta go do a thing -" I start telling Zoe, just as Maddie and Will approach us.
"Hey mini me." Maddie greets her best friend brightly. "Why are you standing around here looking all cosy with him?"
"Madison, I'm a lesbian. I'm not allergic to males. I am allowed to interact with them sometimes." Zoe replies dryly.
"Good, because you're wasting you're time on this male anyway." Maddie says, before flashing me her perfect set of teeth. "He has a job to do tonight."
"Thanks for telling her, Will." I snap at my roommate. He just shrugs his shoulders at me. Love knows no boundaries, it seems.
"What is she talking about?" Zoe asks me, just as Zach joins our group. With Kim. And they're holding hands.
